Have a closed work permit and received a new job offer?
Many workers don’t realize that you may be able to start working for a new employer before receiving the final work permit decision.
The process involves:
✔️ Applying for a new employer-specific work permit
✔️ Submitting a request to IRCC
✔️ Receiving authorization to work while your application is being processed
Keep in mind: the authorization email is not a work permit approval. It only allows you to begin working for the new employer while waiting for a final decision.

Big update for provincial nominees waiting on their PR application acknowledgement 🇨🇦
As of June 9, 2026, IRCC introduced temporary measures allowing PNP applicants to apply for work permit extensions without waiting for their AOR — using their submission confirmation email instead.
This is a direct response to extended processing delays that were leaving nominees without work authorization for months.
Valid until December 31, 2026.

🎙️ Last week, Canada’s Deputy Minister of Immigration spoke directly to immigration consultants at the NCIC 2026 conference - and there were some important signals worth sharing.
Here’s what stood out:
📋 Express Entry Reform is happening - this year
The Deputy Minister confirmed a phased approach to merging the three current programs into one. Phase one is expected in fall 2026. He pointed consultants toward authoritative submissions to get a sense of direction - and said there’s a strong consensus on the areas of reform.
🏘️ Rural and smaller communities are top of mind
There’s growing recognition that immigration policy has been too focused on large metropolitan areas. Trades workers, non-skilled support workers, and smaller jurisdictions are clearly part of the 2027 planning conversation.
⚖️ IRCC is drawing a line between mistakes and fraud
The Deputy Minister was explicit: the vast majority of discrepancies in the system are paperwork errors - not deliberate fraud. He pushed back on the narrative that paints newcomers as bad actors. That matters for how files get reviewed.
⏳ LMIA processing - acknowledged as broken
He openly said that a one-year LMIA processing time «just doesn’t work for business.» Expect pressure to speed up.
So, the system is being rebuilt, and the window to act under current rules is narrowing. If you’ve been sitting on a decision - now is the time to move.

Quebec has introduced an important update that may benefit certain spouses of immigration applicants under its permanent selection programs.
Eligible individuals may now be able to obtain or extend open work permits, allowing them to continue working in Canada while their permanent residence application is being processed.
This update can make a real difference for families who want to maintain financial stability and avoid interruptions in their work authorization during the immigration process.
However, eligibility is not automatic and depends on the specific immigration stream and the principal applicant’s situation.
If you’re unsure whether this applies to you, it’s important to get a proper assessment before making any decisions.
