Starting a new semester in Canada comes with more than classes and assignments.

If you’re an international student attending a college, university or other post-secondary institution, it’s important to keep track of the immigration conditions connected to your studies, including your ability to work, your study permit expiry date and your eligibility for a PGWP after graduation.

Planning ahead can also make it easier to understand how your studies may fit into your longer-term plans in Canada.

If you have questions about your study permit, an extension, PGWP eligibility or future permanent residence options, Encubate can help you understand what may apply to your situation.

Study permit proof-of-funds requirements are changing on September 1, 2026.

For applicants outside Quebec, the annual living-expense requirement for one applicant will increase from $22,895 to $23,448. Higher amounts will also apply when family members are included. Tuition and transportation costs are additional.

But the update goes beyond the dollar amounts.

IRCC's updated guidance also places more emphasis on how funds are documented, including the source of the funds and whether they will remain available throughout the studies. If bank statements are used as proof, the current guidance lists statements covering the past six months, along with documentation showing the source of income reflected in those statements.

Have questions about the new requirements or how they may apply to your study permit application? Contact Encubate and our team can assist.

Thinking about applying for spousal sponsorship in Canada?

A marriage certificate alone is usually not enough for a spousal sponsorship application in Canada.

Immigration officers assess whether the relationship is genuine and ongoing, which is why supporting evidence can play a major role in the process.

Many people are also surprised to learn that common-law partners may qualify as well.

Depending on the case, the sponsored person may also qualify for an open work permit during application processing.

Every application is different, and preparation matters.
