tice began as a quest to find a better way to serve families in crisis. Having to deal with your matter through the traditional court system can be an incredibly stressful, expensive and conflict inducing process. It is a space where your most personal issues and questions are decided upon by a stranger who has limited knowledge of the reality of your family's lives. Collaborative Law offers a different option for families. It allows them the opportunity to resolve their legal issues, even the difficult ones, in a respectful and holistic team environment. It can help give you all the information you need to understand the consequences of your separation and to make empowered decisions which are in your family's best interest moving forward. It allows for creativity and flexibility in handling conflicts and sensitive issues. It is the goal of this process to ensure that your needs and concerns are heard and addressed in a timely and cost effective manner. It is the goal of collaborative professionals to support you in defining your own separation. They do this by helping your family go outside of the legal ranges set by the court system so that you can make the qualitative decisions that are right for you. Reorganizing your family's future does not have to be a damaging process. With his specialized training and experience, Chad is prepared to be your legal guide through your family's separation and the collaborative process. A family lawyer can help you deal with arrears and enforcement issues. Sometimes the problem in correcting payment issues is in your family court order itself and not with the enforcement program. Readdressing an existing order is the most effective way of sorting out these issues.

They're commonly called "deadbeats" — people who refuse to support their families after courts order them to pay — and CBC News has learned they owe more than $3.7 billion across the country for support orders.

Taking a moment to feel gratitude for the things we have can substantially change our perspective on our lives for the better.

It's easy to get caught up in chasing THINGS we don't actually need to the point that we forget about all the wondrous stuff and people around us. Times of family breakdown only amplify this lack of appreciation for what we do have as the things around you are changing and less stable than you're used to. Even when times are tough, don't forget to appreciate how lucky you actually are.

If you have the ability to read this on a computer or iPhone, you're already much better off than most other people on this planet. You're also lucky enough to have connected with a lawyer who'll help guide you to a space where things are even better! ;)

Cheers. Take deep breaths. Focus on the good stuff

Recently I posted a picture of myself in my kitchen, and I immediately started receiving generous messages from people wanting to help me “update” it. Along with their messages came pictures of how my kitchen could look, if I’d just put some effort and money into it. I’ve always loved my kitchen, bu…

In this modern age where far too many seem obsessed with finding their moment of Internet fame, it is important to remember that Big Brother (not the TV series) is also watching. There is a long list of court cases where Crown Prosecutor's, family law litigants and employers have tracked social networking sites and used postings as evidence against a person in court. This article is just one more example and confirms that Manulife Insurance monitors the pages of claimants and are more than willing to cut disability benefits based on posts.

Always consider the potential short and long term consequences of what you post online. What may seem exciting and irrelevant now, can easily come back to haunt you down the line.

For legal advice on how your social networking activities can impact your legal situation, book an appointment with Chad Skinner Law now. Confidentially posting a question on www.chadskinnerlaw.com might actually be just what you need to sort out a problem!

Word is spreading: DIVORCE DOES NOT HAVE TO BE DESTRUCTIVE!

Collaborative Family Law Services are changing the game!

The goal of the collaborative family law process is to positively restructure families instead of forcing them to become adversaries. It is a service which offers the opportunity to avoid the emotional and financial costs of having to litigate a separation or divorce in the traditional manner.

The goals of any collaborative family law case are accomplished by focusing on the following key elements:
1.) Committing to keep the separation/divorce outside the traditional court system.
2.) Fostering an environment where separating spouses can communicate openly and with respect.
3.) Fully disclosing all relevant financial information in a timely fashion.
4.) Ensuring that all communications and negotiations remain confidential.
5.) Agreeing not to use any of the disclosed information against the other spouse should the process not be completed.
6.) Working as part of a team to reach the best solution possible for your family, while accepting that new counsel will have to be retained should one or both spouses abandon the process.

The attached article shows how the collaborative process helped one family move past the dark days of divorce by keeping the focus on what was best for their daughter: “In collaborative divorce,” Ross said, “everyone is held accountable for the best interests of the child. I wouldn’t want anyone to think it was easy. It wasn’t. But collaborative divorce gives you the tools you need. I couldn’t have had all this joy and family without the collaborative process.”

“One of the things I learned going through my divorce that way was that I needed to love my child more than I hated my husband,” said Robyn Ross with a wry laugh. The Vancouver movie industry . . .

Being insightful and aware of why we're behaving a certain way is a very powerful tool. Sometimes, during periods of crisis, people lose that awareness and simply go into a reactive mode which shows itself in poor and inappropriate choices. If you're experiencing a heightened level of stress or an overwhelming emotion, make sure to pause and check in with yourself before taking the next steps. Those moments may be the best steps you can take to reestablish control and calm stormy waters.

I've attached a fantastic article which discusses one therapist's experiences with people in high stress situations and relationships.

Take care of yourself. Always.

When dealing with a separation or divorce the main priority must always be satisfying the best interests of the children involved. Regardless of the conflict surrounding them or the financial situation their family is facing, it is important to remember how important play is to children. Their connection to the things around them, no matter how small, can go a long way in helping to maintain normalcy and ease them through a transition. .

If photographer Gabriele Galimberti has learned anything photographing children around the world with their favorite toys, it’s that kids, no matter their circumstances, love to play.
