In recognition of the first federal National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the office of Hensel Barristers will remain closed for today, September 30, 2021. This supports the TRC Call to Action #80 which calls for this day to be a statutory holiday to "honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process". Even as we pause today, the essential work we do in Indigenous child welfare goes on as we challenge systems that continue to remove Indigenous children from their homes to this day. Katherine Hensel's words on today below:

"As we turn our minds to the fractured, grieving relationship between Canada and the Indigenous peoples of these territories, the loss of so many little ones, and the harm done to far more, it is also important to keep in mind that we are more than our suffering, more than our traumas (no matter how they have shaped us).

So much is precious to us: our children, our elders, the lands we live on and share, our languages, and cultures. We cherish these, and fight to protect them from harm, and they define us, more than all the losses, all the pain, and all the injustice endemic in colonialism, past and present. They make us who we are."

For anyone struggling, we encourage you to reach out to your supports or call the Hope for Wellness Hotline at 1-855-242-3310.

Today the Hensel Barristers team wear our orange shirts to honour those Indigenous children who were stolen from their families and communities to attend residential and day schools. We lay down our to***co and send our prayers to those who survived and those who did not make it home. We honour those children whose culture, language, and ways of being and knowing were beaten out of them. Today, and every day, we fight to put an end to colonial violence against Indigenous children and communities.

Indigenous child welfare is a humanitarian crisis and our fight is three-fold: prevent the unnecessary removal of Indigenous children from their families, communities, and cultures; reunify families who have been traumatically and unnecessarily separated; and transform the systems that separate them.

For many, today will be a day that brings up painful memories, historic and ongoing trauma. If anyone is in need of mental health services, we encourage you to reach out to your supports. If you do not have someone to talk to, we encourage you to call the Hope for Wellness Hotline at 1-855-242-3310.

As the provincial response to COVID-19 continues to adapt, so too will the state of employment law in Ontario. It is important for employers and employees to stay up-to-date on these laws and regulations. These changes are relevant for employers on and off-reserve.

Check out our most recent blogpost on these changes. For more information as this story unfolds, consider registering for our 2-day Employment Law webinar!

There is widespread concern about the effect of COVID-19 on Indigenous children in Ontario's welfare system. Join our Webinars on August 11 and 12 to discuss impacts, potential solutions and future planning!

ndigenous families and communities across Canada have learned, in the most direct and painful way possible, that Indigenous children do not fare well when they are in the care of the state, whether in foster care, group homes, or adopted “out” into non-Indigenous families. A 2016 OHRC inquiry re...
