South Asian Bar Association - Toronto The South Asian Bar Association of Toronto is dedicated to promoting the objectives of South Asian members of the legal profession, throughout the GTA.

Members of SABA include lawyers that self-identify as South Asian or are of South Asian origin, and lawyers that advocate on issues of relevance to the South Asian community. Our membership is dynamic, ever-expanding and includes lawyers from large and small law firms, sole practitioners, government agencies and departments, non-profit organizations, and corporations. Members of the judiciary, academics and law students also form an integral part of SABA. SABA-Toronto was created in 2005 by a small group of volunteers. In the years since its inception, SABA’s membership and activities have grown exponentially. Our current activities include advocating for greater South Asian representation in the judiciary, interacting with the Law Society of Upper Canada on the licensing and accreditation process in Ontario, membership on the Equity Advisory Group of the Law Society, interacting with, mentoring and promoting law students in Ontario’s law schools, promoting the cause of South Asian legal professionals in positions of responsibility and involving ourselves with the provincial bar association and corporations to promote the needs of our members. We serve as a networking forum, an advocacy group and an employment resource. We promote diversity, employment opportunities and where appropriate, social reform. We have also funded a bursary at the University of Western Ontario School of Law. SABA recognizes the achievements of South Asian members of the legal community through its Annual Awards, presented each year at its Annual Gala. Awards are presented in the categories of Lifetime Achievement, Male and Female, and Young Practitioner. The SABA awards are extremely successful and attracts numerous nominations for each category. SABA also holds a number of events throughout the course of the year other than the Annual Gala and Awards. These include the popular “pub night”, an event that allows our members to interact and network in an informal atmosphere, events designed for law students, social forums, and networking opportunities.

SABA Toronto warmly congratulates Justice Shantona Chaudhury on her appointment to the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario (replacing Justice Nishikawa).

Justice Chaudhury brings to the bench an exceptional record as an advocate, including extensive experience in civil and commercial litigation, constitutional law, public inquiries, national security law, and appellate advocacy. Her appointment is a well-deserved recognition of her distinguished contributions to the legal profession and the administration of justice.

We are also especially pleased to congratulate Justice Nishikawa, a longtime friend and supporter of SABA Toronto, on her elevation to the Court of Appeal for Ontario. Throughout her career, Justice Nishikawa has demonstrated a deep commitment to public service, human rights, and the administration of justice, both as counsel and during her tenure on the Superior Court of Justice.

Reminder: SABA Toronto is looking for driven and passionate students for its Student Liaison positions. Build connections, create networking opportunities, and get involved in the largest South Asian Bar Association chapter in North America.

Application process:

E-mail your resume to [email protected] and indicate which position(s) you would like to be considered for. You may, but do not have to, provide a 250-word statement of interest in the positions that you are interested in. Please note the additional instructions regarding applications for Marketing Liaisons below.

All positions will be voluntary and for a term of one year.

The positions are:

1) Marketing Liaison – 3 openings

Marketing Liaisons will play an integral role in ensuring that the work of various SABA Toronto committees is effectively communicated to the membership. These liaisons will work closely with several committees and have the opportunity to learn more about the work of the various committees that they are working with and SABA Toronto’s functioning as a whole.
If you are applying to be a Marketing Liaison, please also submit a sample event graphic or poster that you have created. If you do not have a sample available, please specify this in your email.

2) Research Liaison – 2 openings

Research liaisons will assist SABA Toronto in more in-depth research for its advocacy efforts and strategic planning. These liaisons will have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to SABA’s advocacy objectives while working more directly with a smaller group of board members.

3) Socials Liaison – 2 openings

Socials liaisons will assist various SABA committees in planning socials for students and ensuring that SABA Toronto remains actively involved in SALSA chapters across the province.

Eligibility: To be eligible, you must be a student enrolled in a LLB, JD, or LLM program at a law school in Ontario or currently completing N.C.A. qualifying examinations, and be a member of your school’s SALSA chapter. If you are not a member of a SALSA chapter, please indicate in your email if there is a reason that you cannot be a member of a SALSA chapter.

Reminder: The nomination deadline for the 2026 SABA Toronto Student Recognition Award is October 5, 2026 at 5:00 PM.

Up to four (4) recipients will receive the SABA Toronto Student Recognition Award, recognizing outstanding achievement, accomplishment, and public service within their schools and the South Asian Bar.

Selection Criteria:
The SABA Student Recognition Award recognizes students currently enrolled in a JD or LLB program in Ontario, undertaking the National Committee on Accreditation (“N.C.A.”) Qualifying Examinations, or who have graduated from a JD or LLB program in Ontario or completed the N.C.A. qualifying process in this calendar year, who have achieved excellence in their post-secondary careers, and have demonstrated a commitment to progressing the South Asian Bar within their schools or larger communities.

Eligibility:
1. Nominees must be currently enrolled in a JD or LLB program in an Ontario law school, be an N.C.A. candidate in Ontario, or have graduated from a JD or LLB program in Ontario or completed the N.C.A. qualifying process in Ontario in 2026.
2. Nominees must be a member of their school’s South Asian Law Student Association ("SALSA") or equivalent student association. Where this is not the case, nominees should provide an explanation outlining the reasons for their non-membership.
3. Nominees must submit the following to be considered for an award, as a single PDF:
a) personal statement of no more than 500 words, outlining their academic accomplishments and their contributions to their community and the South Asian Bar;
b) unofficial copies of their most recent law school transcripts;
c) a copy of their curriculum vitae; and
d) letters of support are optional but not required.

Additional Rules:
1. Self-nominations will be accepted.
2. SABA Toronto reserves the right to propose nominations.
3. Nominations must be received no later than October 5, 2026 at 5:00PM.
4. Nominations will be reviewed by SABA Toronto’s Student Outreach Committee, who will also select the award recipients.

This Thursday, September 24th, SABA Toronto is hosting a practical, in-person CPD featuring an experienced panel of litigators who will share their insights on effectively managing a client’s matter from the outset. For young lawyers in particular, navigating client expectations, assessing the merits of a case, developing an effective file strategy, and determining what information should be included in initial pleadings can present important challenges early in a matter.

Our panelists will draw on their experience to discuss these issues and provide practical guidance on approaching a new file with a clear and effective strategy. The discussion will explore client management, early case assessment, strategic decision-making, initial pleadings, and other considerations that can shape the course of a matter from its earliest stages.

Join us for practical insights from our panelists, followed by an opportunity to network with fellow members of the legal community.
