Do you have an updated Will?
November is the Ontario Bar Association’s (OBA) Month

Nandi A O Deterville will again be presenting at one of the many public information sessions for the OBA’s Make a Will Month this November. This time the session is hosted by the Michael Garron Hospital. Her presentation will be held in person on Tuesday, November 25, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. at the Dr. Molly Rundle and Stephen Lister Auditorium at Michael Garron Hospital at 825 Coxwell Ave, Toronto ON M4C 3E7, Canada.

Join this or any of the OBA’s free virtual and/or in-person sessions to learn why we recommend the personalized attention, nuanced understanding and peace of mind a lawyer brings to the often complex, and occasionally emotional, will-preparation and estate-planning process. For generations, Indigenous communities have shaped the land we now call Canada, demonstrating incredible resilience, wisdom, and a deep connection to the environment. This day is an opportunity for all of us to learn, reflect, and honour the vibrant heritage that continues to enrich our country.

HUGE NEWS FOR CANADIANS ABROAD!

Canada just proposed a game-changing bill (Bill C-3) that could end the "first-generation limit" for citizenship by descent! For years, many Canadians born outside the country were unable to pass on their citizenship to their children born abroad, creating a generation of "Lost Canadians."

This new legislation aims to:

- Automatically grant Canadian citizenship to those who would have been citizens today if not for the old, restrictive rules.

- Create a new framework allowing Canadian parents born abroad to pass on citizenship, provided they demonstrate a "substantial connection" to Canada (defined by 1,095 cumulative days of physical presence!).

- Restore citizenship to remaining "Lost Canadians" and their descendants.

This proposes to recognise the deep connection many Canadian families have to their roots, regardless of where they live in the world.

If you're a Canadian born abroad, or have family members who might be impacted, this is the news you've been waiting for! Stay tuned for more details as this bill progresses through Parliament – your Canadian dream could be closer than ever!

Voting is a fundamental right and an important way for citizens to participate in the democratic process. In Canada, the eligibility criteria to vote in federal elections are straightforward:

Canadian Citizenship: You must be a Canadian citizen. Permanent residents (landed immigrants) are not eligible to vote.

Age Requirement: You must be at least 18 years old on election day. You are eligible to vote if you are 17 but will turn 18 on or before election day.

Proof of Identity and Address: You must prove your identity and address. This can be done using various documents such as a driver’s license, passport, or any other government-issued ID that includes your photo, name, and address.
