On October 10, 2024, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) held an Express Entry draw for candidates with strong French language skills.

In this 318th draw, IRCC sent out 1,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to francophone candidates. The minimum score required was 444 points—two points lower than the last draw for this category on September 13, 2024. For tie-breaking, only candidates who submitted their profiles before September 27, 2024, at 18:56:32 UTC were considered.

By October 9, 2024, 209,317 profiles were in the Express Entry pool. So far this year, Canada has issued 87,987 ITAs, with 21,400 of those going to French-speaking candidates.

🇨🇦 Canada has seen a remarkable 62.3% increase in asylum claims in the first half of 2024, compared to the same period last year, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

✔️ The number of claims has soared to 92,130, up from 56,760 in 2023.

➡️ This surge is placing heavy pressure on Canada’s immigration system and local resources, particularly in major cities like Toronto.

▪️ Immigration Minister Marc Miller has acknowledged the strain on municipalities and pledged ongoing support for vulnerable individuals.

✅ Manitoba has experienced the largest percentage increase in claims at inland offices.

Hundreds of Saskatchewan nurses gathered at the legislature, urging the government to take immediate action on healthcare staffing shortages.

Tracy Zambory, president of the Saskatchewan Union of Nurses, stressed the need for concrete plans to reduce wait times and improve patient safety. NDP leader Carla Beck promised to work alongside nurses and invest an additional $1.1 billion in healthcare if elected.

Despite the Saskatchewan Party's claim of hiring over 1,300 nursing graduates under a plan introduced two years ago, Zambory highlighted that there is still a shortage of 700 full-time registered nurses in the province.

Election day is October 28.

📍 The Quebec government has announced major changes to the financial assistance provided under the Programme québécois d’apprentissage du français (PQAF), effective September 23, 2024.

🔎 Part-time individual learners will no longer receive financial aid for participation in French courses, though childcare assistance will still be available.

📝 Full-time courses will continue to offer full financial support.

✔️ In the business sector, companies with 100+ employees in Quebec will no longer qualify for short-term wage compensation and skills training assistance.

▫️ These changes aim to better focus resources and enhance French language learning across the province.
