Joint custody means that major decisions about a child’s welfare — education, healthcare, religion, and more — must be made jointly.
This requires strong communication and cooperation between parents. In high-conflict situations, joint decision-making can become difficult, and the court may instead award sole decision-making responsibility to one parent, to ensure the child’s needs are met.
Tip: Be realistic about communication. If joint decision-making responsibility (old term: Joint Custody) isn’t workable, exploring alternative arrangements may better support your child’s well-being.
