How does a small firm actually become more agile? At the Canadian Legal Summit, Caravel’s Jacqueline Dinsmore and Monica Goyal walked through a real innovation case study and showed what changed, what worked and what they’d do differently.

One idea that stuck: question the pot roast. Like the family recipe that cut the ends off the roast only because great-grandma’s pan was too small, many firm processes exist simply because “that’s how we’ve always done it.” Ask why a process exists before you automate it.

We're thrilled to welcome Gary P**n to Caravel Law!

Gary is a senior corporate and commercial lawyer with more than 25 years of experience both in private practice and in-house. He has served as General Counsel and Corporate Secretary at Canada Drives and as Senior Legal Counsel at Peoples Group. Across his career Gary has advised on commercial contracts, financing, technology, procurement, M&A, regulatory compliance, privacy, governance and risk management.

He has built and led legal departments, created contract templates and playbooks, and worked directly with regulators including OSFI and BCFSA. Gary gives practical, business-focused advice that supports fast-moving organizations in regulated and technology-driven industries through all stages of growth.

When the work day is done, you can find Gary out on a run or planning his next trip ✈️

For Truth and Reconciliation Day, our team got the opportunity to sit down with our friends and partners at the Anishnabeg Outreach (AO) to learn more about their initiatives and the road forward to reconciliation.

What you see here is just a small bite of the insights Stephen shared with us around AO's definition of reconciliation, the work that goes into achieving those outcomes, and the programs they are building to help us get there.

John is an intellectual property and corporate-commercial lawyer who has spent his career on both sides of the desk, in-house and in private practice. Most recently he was Director, Legal & Intellectual Property at Husky Technologies, where he ran global patent and trademark portfolios and advised on IP protection, licensing, enforcement, infringement and freedom-to-operate matters. John is also a registered patent and trademark agent in Canada.

John brings deep commercial experience, drafting and negotiating supply, technology and joint development agreements, managing litigation, and handling M&A due diligence and trade compliance. Before going in-house, he practiced at Rowand LLP, Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP and Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP.

Outside the office, you'll find John running, cycling, on the slopes or cheering (sometimes suffering) through a Toronto FC or Blue Jays season.

Beau brings 25+ years of corporate-commercial and risk experience to our team. A PwC Canada Alumni Partner, he served as Contracting Risk Leader at PwC's Contracting Centre of Excellence, Risk Management Leader at PwC Law, and before that as Co-General Counsel and Corporate Secretary at PwC Canada, negotiating complex technology, outsourcing, joint venture and public sector agreements along the way.

He's a governance leader, having chaired the National Board of Diabetes Canada, and holds the ICD Not-for-Profit Governance certification, but most importantly he is a devout Leafs fan, an avid F1 watcher, and a car aficionado and collector.
