Toronto Sinhala and Tamil New Year Festival -

The Sinhala and Tamil New Year Festival was once again celebrated with great success in Toronto during the April 2026 festive season. The event brought together people from all walks of life, creating a vibrant and joyful celebration of Sri Lankan culture and tradition.

A warm gathering of cinema lovers followed the screening of the classic film 'Gehenu Lamai' (ගැහැණු ළමයි).
The film, directed by Sumitra Peries, is widely regarded as a remarkable work, both in its time and in the broader history of world cinema.

It has long been recognized in international film circles and has recently gained renewed appreciation through global discussions, retrospectives, and recognition associated with platforms such as the Cannes Film Festival. Ajith Jinadasa was the lead actor and took the initiative to bring the film for screening in Canada.

This gathering was organized and sponsored by Prasanna Pathiraja Law as part of its commitment to supporting cultures and the arts around the world.

කැනඩාවේ "ගැහැණු ලමයි" ආගමනය. ප්‍රධාන අනුග්‍රහය , Prasanna Deshapriya Pathiraja at Prasanna Pathiraja Law.

This iconic 1978 Sri Lankan drama was written and directed by the legendary filmmaker Sumitra Peries and produced by her husband, Lester James Peries. The film holds a special place in Sinhala cinema, introducing Vasanthi Chathurani to the screen and featuring Ajith Jinadasa in the main male role. Ajith Jinadasa is also the organizer of the film’s presentation in Canada.
