Most homeowners pick a fixed rate because it feels safe. Here's the thing worth saying out loud: it isn't safety. It's a fee you pay to stop checking rate news every morning.

That fee has a number attached. Lenders price fixed terms higher than variable for a reason. You're buying predictability, and they're absorbing the risk you'd rather not carry.

Sometimes that trade is worth every dollar. A young family with a tight monthly budget and no appetite for surprises? Fixed makes sense. The premium buys real sleep at night.

Sometimes it doesn't. A homeowner with cash flow flexibility, a shorter time horizon, or savings that can absorb a rate bump may be overpaying for comfort they don't actually need.

So the real question isn't "fixed or variable." It's this: how much is peace of mind worth to you this year, and is that the best place to spend it?

We unpacked the full framework in our April blog, "To Fix or Not to Fix? Rates and Your Mortgage in a Shaky Economy." Worth a read before your next renewal conversation.

Half of Canadian adults have no valid will. When they pass, their families pay for it. In court.

The Angus Reid Institute puts that number at 51%. That is the majority of households leaving every decision about their assets, their children, and their final wishes to a provincial formula.

A few numbers worth sitting with:

51% of Canadian adults have no valid will (Angus Reid, 2023)
3x higher legal costs for estates settled without one (Canadian Bar Association, 2023)
1 in 4 families report conflict over an estate with no plan (Statistics Canada, 2022)

The financial cost is real. Probate fees climb, executor work multiplies, and the estate shrinks before anyone inherits a dollar. The relational cost is harder to measure but often louder. Siblings stop speaking. Second marriages get complicated. A family business stalls during the season it can least afford to.

None of this requires a complex situation to happen. It just requires no plan.

A basic estate framework, a will, powers of attorney, and beneficiary designations reviewed against your accounts, takes far less time than most people assume. Pair that with an accountant who understands how the estate will be taxed, and the picture gets clearer still.

At TvH Group, our legal and accounting teams work on these documents together so your plan reflects both the law and the numbers. If estate planning has been sitting on your list for a while, consider this your nudge to move it up.

Your family should inherit your assets, not your paperwork.

The families who pay the steepest price aren't the ones who waited too long to die. They're the ones who waited too long to plan.

Most were in their 40s and 50s. Growing business. Mortgage. Young kids. No will, no power of attorney, no clear instructions written down anywhere.

Estate planning gets filed under "things for later" because the brain treats it like a deathbed task. The folder stays empty. Then something unexpected happens. A diagnosis. An accident. A sudden gap where a decision-maker used to be.

The people left behind inherit two things at once: grief, and a legal puzzle nobody wrote the instructions for. The clients who arrive after the crisis almost always say the same thing. We thought we had more time.

A few questions worth answering before you need the answers:

>> If you couldn't sign a document tomorrow, who can sign for you?
>> If your business owner status changed overnight, what happens to payroll on Friday?
>> If your kids needed a guardian next week, have you named one in writing?

Estate planning is about protecting the people who'd stay. The best time to build the plan is the boring season, when nothing is wrong, nothing is urgent, and you still get to make every decision yourself.

CAN A GIC-ONLY RRSP, TFSA AND LIRA GENERATE ENOUGH FOR MILES'S RETIREMENT
As someone who’s helped clients navigate retirement planning for over 30 years, I’ve seen many consider a GIC-only approach for their RRSP, TFSA, and LIRA. While GICs offer security, limiting yourself to them can put your retirement at risk—mainly because low returns and inflation may erode your savings faster than expected. I’ve found that a more balanced strategy is essential: phased work reduction, diversification across asset classes, strategic account conversions, and tax-efficient income planning all play important roles in achieving both growth and financial security. Each plan I build is tailored to the unique needs of my clients, ensuring their retirement vision stays on track, even as the market landscape changes.

Can a GIC-only RRSP, TFSA and LIRA generate enough for Miles's retirement?
When thinking about retirement planning—especially for someone like Miles, who aims to retire at 68 with a $90,000 annual income from investments, CPP, and OAS—the question often comes up: is relying solely on GICs within your RRSP, TFSA, and LIRA enough? After working with clients for over three decades, I’ve seen the value in a diversified approach. Experts frequently suggest incorporating bonds, dividend-paying stocks, and even a phased transition into retirement, along with strategic account conversions. These strategies don’t just help optimize income—they also help manage risk, which is essential for a comfortable and sustainable retirement. Crafting a plan that’s tailored to your goals and risk profile makes all the difference.
