New asylum claim eligibility rules are now in effect and will apply to all claims made on or after June 3, 2025. These rules help keep the asylum system strong, fair and focused on providing protection to those who need it.

Rule #2: Asylum claims from people who enter Canada between ports of entry along the US land border and who make a claim after 14 days won’t be referred to the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada - IRB.

The Parent/Grandparent Program is now officially on a full pause. Canada will not accept new parent and grandparent permanent residency sponsorship applications until further notice, according to a ministerial directive. The directive published in the Canada Gazette states the government remains committed to family reunification but will focus on processing applications received last year.
