This was an interesting case from earlier in my career involving former Maple Leafs captain Rick Vaive. After a full trial and careful review of the evidence, the court found him not guilty of impaired driving. A good reminder that every case deserves a thorough defence and close scrutiny of the facts.

Judge finds his testimony credible, despite a breathalyzer test that showed him at twice the legal limit.

Did you know on average, 9 charges or license suspensions for alcohol or drug-impaired driving are laid every hour in Canada — that’s over 215 each day.

215 lives disrupted every single day. Beyond the charges themselves, the ripple effect on families, careers, and public safety is enormous. One decision can change everything. Choose not to drive impaired.

A recent study found that among over 8,300 Canadian drivers treated after a crash, more than half (54.9%) tested positive for at least one impairing substance, including alcohol, cannabis, prescription medications, opioids, and stimulants.

- 54.9% of injured drivers had one or more impairing substances in their system.
- 16.3% tested positive for THC (cannabis) — slightly more than the 16.1% who tested positive for alcohol.
- 28.4% had depressants detected (including some prescription medications).
- 21.6% had two or more substance types present.

Importantly, this study measured blood levels of substances, not just police reports, providing a real look at what’s in drivers’ systems after a crash.

This isn’t just a statistic, it’s a reminder that drug and alcohol use behind the wheel continues to put lives at risk and has real, sometimes life-changing consequences for families and communities.

If you’re ever unsure whether it’s safe to drive, the safest choice is always to plan ahead, find an alternative ride, or wait until you are completely unimpaired.

This cross-sectional study assesses the prevalence of alcohol, cannabis, recreational drugs, and sedating medications in injured drivers in Canada and identifies demographic and collision factors associated with substance use.
