Latest Express Entry Draw #439: 2,000 ITAs Issued at CRS 521 in September 2026
Another valuable draw for the skilled workers hoping to become permanent residents of Canada has been made recently through the Latest Express Entry Draw. IRCC conducted Express Entry Draw #439 on September 1, 2026, inviting 2,000 people via Canadian Experience Class (CEC). The CRS score cut-off was 521. There has been yet another critical Canada Express Entry Draw 2026, wherein 562 candidates have been invited under the Provincial Nominee Program to apply for permanent residency.

C.D. Howe Institute calls for major reform of Canada’s asylum system
Canada’s asylum system is facing mounting pressure from rising claim volumes, long processing times and a growing backlog, according to a new analysis by the C.D. Howe Institute. Asylum claims increased from fewer than 24,000 in 2016 to more than 114,000 in 2025, while people who previously held legal status in Canada have accounted for an average of 79% of claims since 2023. The backlog has reached approximately 277,000 cases, representing an estimated $4.6 billion in potential costs, while the average finalization time was 19 months in 2025. The analysis argues that current reforms, including Bill C-12, do not fully address incentives within the system and recommends considering a temporary, reviewable protection model instead of providing a direct pathway to permanent residence following a successful refugee claim.

University of Toronto leads North American public universities in research output
The University of Toronto secured the top spot in research output among North American publicly funded institutions in the August 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities. Scoring 75.1 in the publication metric, U of T surpassed top state schools, including UCLA and UC Berkeley. The score evaluates total papers indexed across major science and social science citation databases.

BC invited entrepreneurs under two BCPNP business streams
On August 25, 2026, British Columbia held new draws under the entrepreneur streams of the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BCPNP). The province issued 11 invitations under the Entrepreneur Immigration Base stream, which is designed for experienced entrepreneurs seeking to establish a new business or acquire an existing one in British Columbia. In addition, British Columbia invited five candidates under the Entrepreneur Immigration Regional stream. The minimum score was 116 points for both streams.

Alberta held two new draws for AAIP candidates
Alberta released the results of the two new immigration draws that the province conducted under the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP). On August 14, 2026, the AAIP invited 743 Alberta Opportunity Stream candidates who had a minimum score of 58. Additionally, the province issued invitations to 24 non-Express Entry candidates under the Dedicated Health Care Pathway. The cut-off score for this draw was 60 points.

Ontario invests $3 million to support province-wide Francophone initiatives
The Ontario Government is investing $3 million through the 2026–27 Francophone Community Grants Program to fund 75 projects across the province. The initiative aims to protect and promote the social, cultural, and economic vitality of Franco-Ontarian communities by expanding French-language services, supporting bilingual workforce training, and creating local employment opportunities. Supported projects include digital skills training, community mental health supports, and cultural platform development managed by local non-profits and businesses. Backed in part by a $1 million federal contribution, the annual program focuses on long-term community outreach and economic growth.

CILA urges IRCC to allow in-Canada Super Visa renewals for vulnerable parents and grandparents
The Canadian Immigration Lawyers Association (CILA) has formally submitted a letter to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requesting an in-Canada renewal pathway for the Parents and Grandparents Super Visa Program. Currently, holders of the temporary visa must travel internationally to complete renewal applications. CILA argues that requiring travel creates unnecessary hardship for elderly applicants, individuals with mobility limitations, and those with medical conditions that make travel unsafe.
