My father, the late Hon. A. A. Thompson (Alfred Anaclitus Thompson aka โMalcolmโ) from Trinidad and Tobago ๐น๐น.
Hon. A. A. Thompson was a prominent public servant, barrister, and cabinet minister in Trinidad and Tobago who played a key role in the country's move toward independence from the British Empire. He founded the Public Servants Association, served as Registrar General, and was a close confidant of the first Prime Minister, the late Rt. Hon. Dr. Eric Williams.
His legacy continues through memoirs written by his family, including the book Colonialism to Independence: Memoir of Hon. A. A. Thompson, Stronger Together, as well as through his family's historical residence which now houses the Civil Courts on Cipriani Boulevard.
Early career: Thompson was a career public servant from 1936 before earning his law degree and becoming a barrister-at-law. In 1938 he founded the Civil Service Association (now the PSA). He rose through the ranks to become the Registrar General, the highest position in the civil service.
Political life: He was a key figure in the move to independence and was hand-picked by Dr. Eric Williams to run for office, winning his constituency in Tunapuna. He later served as a Cabinet Minister.
Legacy: He is remembered for his integrity, dedication to public service, and as a key protagonist in the fight for independence.
A family memoir highlights his life and large family, which is said to have inspired Pope Paul VI's encyclical Humanae Vitae. The former family residence is now the site of the Civil Courts of Law situated at the Corner of Cipriani Boulevard and Tragarete Road in Port of Spain.
