We are pleased to announce that Ms. Pantea Jafariea Jafari appeared before the Standing Senate of Canada - Sénat du Canada of Canada - Sénat du Canada Committee on National Security, Defence, and Veterans Affairs last week on behalf of both the CILA: Canadian Immigration Lawyers Association: Canadian Immigration Lawyers Association and Canadian Muslim Lawyers Association - CMLA - L' ACAM. She spoke to concerns with the entity being created to oversee the conduct of Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Canada Border Services Agency officers. The entity that will be created by the present bill will be a complaint review body only. This is because its findings will be mere recommendations to the heads of the RCMP, CBSA, or the Minister, as confirmed by the Minister of Public Safety. It will not have any enforcement powers.

Nonetheless, both organizations, along with a coalition of 6 others, recommended the approval of Bill C-20, An Act establishing the Public Complaints and Review Commission without further amendments to ensure that an entity is finally created as a starting point to work from.
Ms. Jafari’s testimony took place on Monday, October 21, 2024.
