আজ সকাল থেকেই মনটা অদ্ভুত রকমের ভালো। এক ধরনের শান্তি, তৃপ্তি আর আনন্দ মনের ভেতর জেগে আছে। মনে হচ্ছিল, দিনটা যেন একটু বিশেষভাবে উদযাপন করি। তাই ইমামকে বললাম, “চলো, আজ কিছু একটা সেলিব্রেট করি।”

সে অবাক হয়ে জানতে চাইল, “কী সেলিব্রেট করবে?”

প্রশ্নটা শুনে আমিও একটু থেমে গেলাম। সত্যিই তো, আমি কী সেলিব্রেট করতে চাই? কেন আজ মনটা এত ভালো?

হয়তো আইনজীবীদের জীবনেও এমন কিছু দিন আসে, যখন কোনো মামলা জেতার আনন্দের চেয়েও বড় হয়ে ওঠে একজন মানুষের স্বপ্নকে বাঁচিয়ে রাখার তৃপ্তি।

কয়েক মাস ধরে একজন International student-র খুব জটিল একটি কেস নিয়ে কাজ করছি। সে কানাডায় আছে প্রায় ৫ বছর ধরে। বেশ কিছুদিন পড়াশোনাও করেছে এখানে। কিন্তু তার স্টাডি পারমিট আর নবায়ন হচ্ছিল না। একাধিকবার আবেদন করে প্রত্যাখ্যাত হয়েছে। কানাডা ছেড়ে যাবার চিঠিও সে পেয়েছে। শেষ আশ্রয় হিসেবে সে আমাদের কাছে আসে।

আমরা যখন কোনো কেস নিয়ে কাজ করি, তখন শুধু কাগজপত্র দেখি না; একজন মানুষের জীবন, তার স্বপ্ন, তার ভয়, তার অনিশ্চয়তার গল্পও জানতে হয়। কখনো কখনো ক্লায়েন্টদের সেই মানসিক চাপ অজান্তেই আমাদের ভেতরেও জায়গা করে নেয়।

এই তরুণ শিক্ষার্থী তার ভবিষ্যৎ নিয়ে শঙ্কিত ছিল। তার স্বপ্ন কি এখানেই থেমে যাবে? পড়াশোনার পেছনে ব্যয় করা অর্থ, সময় আর শ্রম কি সবই বৃথা হয়ে যাবে? আমরা বিভিন্ন দিক থেকে বিষয়টি বিশ্লেষণ করছিলাম, কিন্তু কোনো আশাব্যঞ্জক সমাধান খুঁজে পাচ্ছিলাম না।

এক পর্যায়ে মনে হলো, তার আগের একটি পুনর্বিবেচনার আবেদনের (reconsideration) বিষয়ে আবার ফলো আপ করে দেখা যাক। তাই করলাম।

আর তারপর এল সেই কাঙ্ক্ষিত সংবাদ।

আইআরসিসি (IRCC) থেকে চিঠি এলো—তার স্টাডি পারমিট অনুমোদিত হয়েছে।

চিঠিটা হাতে পাওয়ার পর থেকেই মনটা ভরে আছে এক অন্যরকম আনন্দে। আমার নিজের সন্তানের চেয়েও ছোট একজন তরুণকে তার স্বপ্নযাত্রার পথে আবার এগিয়ে যেতে সাহায্য করতে পেরেছি—এর চেয়ে বড় প্রাপ্তি আর কী হতে পারে?

মজার বিষয় হলো, এই সমাধান হয়ে যাওয়ায় আমাদের নেওয়া অগ্রিম আইনি ফি-এর প্রায় ৭০ শতাংশই তাকে ফেরত দিতে হবে। কিন্তু আজ আরো একবার মনে হল, মানুষের স্বপ্নের কাছে অর্থ কতটাই না তুচ্ছ! সে স্বপ্ন আমার হোক বা অন্য কারও—কোনো ক্লায়েন্টের, কোনো শিক্ষার্থীর, কোনো তরুণের ।

আমি আবার ইমামকে বললাম, “চলো, আজ সেলিব্রেট করি।”

কারণ আজ আমরা শুধু একটি মামলা সমাধান করি নি; একজন মানুষের স্বপ্নকে থেমে যেতে দিইনি।

একজন আইনজীবী হিসেবে এর চেয়ে বড় উদযাপনের উপলক্ষ আর কী হতে পারে?

“The federal government will not accept any new applications this year from people who want to sponsor their parents and grandparents to come to Canada. The Immigration Department says the change is part of an effort to responsibly manage the system.
In a statement posted online, the department said interest in the program continues to exceed the number of available spaces.There are 60,500 applications in progress already and wait times for processing are around 33 months, or up to 66 months in Quebec. The program was launched in 2020, when more than 200,000 permanent residents and citizens expressed interest in sponsoring a parent or grandparent to come to Canada.

Each year, thousands of people who expressed interest are selected to formally apply.
An official with the Immigration Department said the pause will not change the plan to approve up to 15,000 people for permanent residence in 2026 and 2027 as part of the government’s immigration levels strategy.
The pause on accepting new applications is in effect “until further notice,” the government said.
Canadian citizens and permanent residents can still apply for a “super visa” to allow their parents and grandparents to visit for five years at a time, and for up to 10 years total, on a temporary basis. “

“Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has published a new regulatory initiative on its Forward Regulatory Plan that proposes the creation of a single new federal high-skilled immigration class. This new class would completely replace the three existing programs that have formed the foundation of Express. Entry for the past decade. The Federal Skilled Worker Class, Canadian Experience Class and Federal Skilled Trades Class would all be repealed under the proposed changes.

IRCC has confirmed that public consultations on this proposal will begin in Spring 2026, and given that spring has already arrived, stakeholders can expect the consultation process to open at any time now.”

Canada is preparing to make the most significant structural change to its Express Entry system since the program launched in 2015.
