Canadian officials have moved to restrict travel and immigration from several central African countries amid a fast-spreading Ebola outbreak, citing the upcoming FIFA World Cup as a key factor in the decision to tighten borders. Applications already in process will continue to be handled, and those mid-travel are exempt.

David Garson was recently quoted in a CTV News article about a significant new U.S. immigration policy that could affect Canadians living in the United States.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has announced that most foreigners on temporary visas must now apply for green cards through consular services in their home countries - rather than from within the U.S. For Canadians, that means going through the U.S. consulate in Montreal.

There are still many open questions, including what exceptions will apply and how much discretion immigration officials will have in applying the policy.

A new U.S. policy requiring most foreigners to apply for green cards from their home countries may cause long waits and complications for Canadians living in the U.S. seeking permanent residency, Canadian immigration lawyers say.

Canadian citizenship applications have surged recently, particularly from the United States, following the implementation of Bill C-3 in December 2025. This legislation effectively removes the "first-generation limit," allowing Canadian parents born abroad to pass their citizenship to their children, provided they meet a physical presence requirement in Canada.

Applications rose almost 50 per cent in January compared to a year ago, and U.S. applications are the largest group by far.

The federal government is moving to replace Canada's three primary economic immigration programs—the Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, and Federal Skilled Trades—with a single, unified "high-skilled immigration class." This restructuring, detailed in recent regulatory notices, aims to streamline eligibility and modernize the selection process within the Express Entry system. While specific details of the amendments are still emerging, the shift signals a significant effort to simplify study and work authorizations while updating federal economic immigration standards to be more responsive to labour market needs.

Three core federal skilled immigration programs will be streamlined, the department announces as part of a string of coming regulatory changes.
