πΊπΈ USA PROPOSES MAJOR NEW FEES FOR INTERNATIONAL-STUDENT OPT
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has proposed substantial fees connected with Optional Practical Training for F-1 international students:
β
US$70,000 for a studentβs first OPT recommendation
β
US$30,000 for each subsequent recommendation, potentially including STEM OPT
Under the proposal, the studentβs SEVP-certified institution would pay the government fee before recommending OPT in SEVIS.
β οΈ These fees are not currently in effect. This is a proposed rule, not a final policy. Formal publication is scheduled for October 8, 2026, after which public comments and further rulemaking will follow.
Current students should continue following existing OPT procedures while monitoring official updates. Prospective students may wish to ask institutions how the proposal could affect future OPT support and costs.
