“My permit is expiring… do I have to leave Canada?”

This is one of the most important questions to ask before your status expires.
If you submit an eligible application to extend your authorized stay before your current status expires, you may be able to legally remain in Canada under maintained status while IRCC makes a decision.

But if your status expires before you apply, the situation can become very different. You may need to apply for restoration, if eligible, and there are important restrictions during that period.

⚠️ The date you apply can make a BIG difference.

A study permit refusal doesn’t always mean you didn’t have enough documents. Sometimes, it means your application didn’t tell a convincing story. 🇨🇦
We regularly see applicants struggle with these three areas:

❌ Temporary intent – Have you clearly explained why you are studying in Canada and what you plan to do after your studies?
❌ Finances – It’s not only about how much money is in the bank. The source, history and availability of the funds can also matter.
❌ Study plan – Does your chosen program make sense based on your education, work experience and future career goals?

You may have a genuine reason to study in Canada and sufficient funds, but if your application doesn't clearly demonstrate your circumstances, the visa officer may still have concerns.

Having money in your bank account may not be enough for a Canadian study permit.

When IRCC assesses your application, the question is not simply “How much money do you have?”

The officer may also look at:
💰 Where did the money come from?
Can you clearly explain the source of your funds, especially large or recent deposits?
🏦 Are the funds actually available to you?
The money should be accessible and available to pay for your studies—not just temporarily placed in an account.
📚 Can the funds support your studies?

You need to show sufficient and available funds for tuition, living expenses and transportation, without relying on working in Canada.

And finances are only one part of the assessment. Your purpose of study and temporary intent can also affect the decision.

⚠️ A strong study permit application does more than show a bank balance—it tells the story behind the money.
