Determined in collaboration with the U.S., these changes will enhance overall security for both countries and will allow the CBSA to use its resources more efficiently by deploying officers at busier ports of entry.
This alignment will also allow both countries to return inadmissible travellers and goods to the other country.

Updated June 24, 2024
These changes are now in effect and apply to all applications being processed:
• You now only need 6 months of eligible work experience from inside or outside Canada to qualify for permanent residence.
• For the Gaining experience category, we’ll accept eligible work experience
o from inside or outside Canada
o gained anytime between the 36-month period before you submitted your permanent residence application and the date you provide proof of work experience
