Minor children already in Canada are authorized to study without a study permit at the pre-school, primary or secondary level if one of their parents (biological or adoptive) is authorized to work or study in Canada; this includes temporary residents who are
• work permit holders
• study permit holders
University Canada West (UCW) example: Ramez is applying to come to Canada as a student studying at UCW and he is intending to bring along his two children who are 5 and 11 years old. In this case if Ramez gets approved for his Study Permit his kids should be able to attend school alongside him without having to obtain a Study Permit for them.

When to apply for PGWP.

Don’t let your status expire while you wait for your marks. If your study permit will expire before you get your marks, you have 2 options. You can apply for a visitor record to stay in Canada longer, or leave Canada and apply for your PGWP. If you stay in Canada and let your permit expire, you must apply to restore your status as a student to apply for your PGWP. To restore your status, you must pay additional fees.
Example:
Behrang is waiting for his internrship marks from University Canada West and his Study Permit is going to be expired within one week. Based on his situation Behrang decided to apply visitor record so he can remain in Canada.

World Gates Smart Tip: Paying full first year tuition fees for Student Direct Stream (SDS)

If you are applying for SDS you need to ensure that you meet all basic requirements. One of these requirements is to provide proof of full payment of tuition for the applicant’s first year of study. Accepted proof of payment may include:
1) a receipt of payment from your DLI.
2) an official letter from the DLI confirming payment of tuition fees.
3) a receipt from a bank showing that tuition fees have been paid to the DLI.
4) proof that the tuition fee amount has been transferred into a repository account at the DLI to be applied to the tuition bill at a later date.

Failing to do so, may delay your application process or may result in your application being rejected.

Also note that the SDS is available only to a limited number of countries. Make sure to know whether your citizenship makes you eligible for the SDS program before looking into this option.

World Gates Smart Tip: Temporary Resident Visa vs Study Pemit

A work permit or study permit does not, by itself, give you the right to enter Canada. A work permit only gives you the right to work in Canada once you arrive. Similarly, a study permit only gives you the right to study in Canada once you arrive. However, in order to arrive, you need to have a temporary resident visa (TRV). Indeed, IRCC does not automatically issue you a new or extended TRV if you sucessfully extend your work or study permit. If you need a new visitor visa, you may need to submit a separate application. You should apply at least 2 months before your TRV expires.

You can apply for a visitor visa from inside Canada if you meet all the conditions below:
1) You are already legally present in Canada
2) You hold a valid study or work permit
3) You intend to leave and return to Canada in the near future
4) Your existing TRV is expiring, or expired and was valid for only
one entry

World Gates Smart Tips: Express Entry Points and Online Education.

International students who study in Canada are great candidates for various permanent residency programs. IRCC allots additional points for education and work experience for international students because Canada has a public policy goal of attracting international talent to contribute to the Canadian economy. However, international students should be aware that online programs at Canadian DLIs are not considered valid for the purpose of points allocations for Express Entry draw scores. A student may still be eligible for a post graduate work permit with an online course, and get express entry points for that experience, but will not get extra education points because the program was administered online, as a distance education degree.

UCW example: Joseph is intending to complete his full MBA online with UCW. Although Joseph will qualify for his PGWP if all other conditions are met, when he submits his Express Entry Profile his program won’t be counted as Canadian Education. Therefore, Joseph won’t receive points for his MBA degree.

World Gates Smart Tip: Matching past experience to program of study.

When you are preparing for the submission of your Study Permit documents, an important component of a convincing application is to demonstrate a link between your past work and academic experience to your program of study and future plans. This should be well explained in your study plan document. At World Gates, we have noticed that applications that fail to logically connect their experience to their program of study and future plans tend to have their study permit applications refused. Indeed, even with the right financial documents, such a weakeness in the application can result in refusal.

Example: Behrad applied to UCW for the MBA program. His Study Permit application got rejected as his previous educational and employment background was in Dentistry. He was operating as a Dental Surgeon, and did not explain how an MBA degree would help him further his career as a dental surgeon. The Immigration Officer was not convinced that Behrad was a bonfide student and rejected his application.

World Gates Smart Tip: Permanent Residency for International Students

Canadian Immigration has launched a public policy that targets foreign nationals who have been granted an eligible Canadian credential, and who are currently employed in Canada, to provide an influx of talent across the economic landscape. In so doing, this public policy recognizes the economic contribution of recent international graduates and acknowledges Canada’s ongoing need for the talent, skills, Canadian education, and work experience of these skilled immigrants, which has been exacerbated during this exceptional time. This initiative will serve the first 40,000 applicants who apply and the processing times are 6 months.

Example: Joanna graduated from UCW with her Masters Degree and she is now working for a company as a Sales and Operations Coordinator. Based on the new policy launched by IRCC she can now apply for her Permanent Residency and in Canada.

World Gates Smart Tip: Student Work Experience & Express Entry Points.

Students who work during their studies may have heard that Canadian work experience counts toward Express Entry points for a Permanent Residence Progam. Canadian work experience does indeed count towards Express Entry points, however, Canadian work experience gained while a student is completing their studies does not. Only work experience gained AFTER graduation using a post graduate work permit (PGWP) counts. And even then, the work experience must be full time, and at least one year or 12 months in total. If the post graduate work experience is part-time, then the experience must be 2 years in total.

Example: During their studies in Canada, students are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week. However, the experience gained during this period does not count towards their Express Entry Profile points. Jaymal graduated from UCW and he is now submitting his profile for Express Entry. During his studies he was working part time as a waiter. That working experience does not count towards his points for his Express Entry profile. If he wants work experience points, he must apply for a PGWP, and have at least 1 year of full-time, or 2 years of part-time work experience.

World Gates Smart Tip: The importance of a Study Plan

When when submitting your Study Permit Application, a good study plan is key. Study plans have to be individualized, detailed and well-supported. Generic copy paste jobs will be easily identified and will not be effective. A student is required to explain the logic behind ther study plan and the reasons that they intend to respect the terms and conditions of the Visa. In certain cases, applications where a strong study plan is present can be more beneficial than the proof of funds.

Example: A Nigerian student was refused because the officer believed that the student although financially stable, was not qualified to attend University Canada West. The student was rejected as the application was not convincing enough that student will be gaining any new skills through the Program as he had already graduated from a Masters Program in his country. The student did not do a good job of explaining why a second Masters degree was important to their development and future goals.

World Gates Smart Tip: Nigeria Student Express Program

Nigeria Student Express (NSE) is a pilot initiative at the IRCC visa office (VO) in Lagos aimed at improving processing times for study permit applicants in Nigeria who are planning to study at the university level in Canada. NSE is only for students who have a letter of admission for a Bachelor, Master’s or PhD degree program, or other graduate-level studies. Students can apply using a secure financial verification system, MyBank, to show that they have sufficient funds for their studies in Canada. MyBank is available from the principal commercial banks in Nigeria. Prospective students in Nigeria can apply online as soon as they have the required documents. Students are required to provide proof of an IELTS with a minimum of 6 in each of the component bands.

Example: Sunday is a Nigerian student that had submitted an application for the MBA program for January intake. A few weeks after submitting his application he received a letter from IRCC that he qualifies for the Nigeria Student Express program. If Sunday is able to submit the required documents at the set deadline he can have his application processed within a much shorter period of time.

World Gates Smart Tip: Returning home or travelling as an International Student.

Your study permit is not a travel document. By itself, a study permit does not give you the right to travel to or enter Canada. Along with your permit, you may need:
• a visitor visa (temporary resident visa) or
• an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

Depending on where you are from, you may only need your passport. Make sure you know which document you need to travel to and enter Canada.

Having the travel document you need also does not guarantee that you will be be allowed back into Canada. You still must show the border services officer that you meet all the requirements in order to re-enter. If you need a visitor visa to enter Canada make sure the one you have will still be valid when you return to Canada. If your visit visa is set to expire before your return, you must apply to extend it before you leave Canada.

UCW/TSOM example: If you currently are enrolled with UCW/TSOM and wish to travel to visit your family back home you need to ensure that you have a valid Temporary Resident Visa along with your Study Permit. The Study Permit document is what allows you to continue studying in your institution however it will not permit you to travel.
