Deadlines matter in tax disputes.
If a taxpayer disagrees with a CRA reassessment, they generally have only 90 days from the date the reassessment is issued to file an objection.
In some cases, the law allows an additional 12 months to request an extension. After that, obtaining more time is extremely difficult, even where the taxpayer may have a very strong case.
Recently, the CRA argued that our client’s reassessment had been issued years ago and that it was far too late to object.
Our lawyers carefully reviewed the evidence and proved that the reassessment letter had never been properly mailed. As a result, the reassessment had not been properly issued under the law.
This allowed our client to regain the right to challenge an audit decision from almost 8 years ago.
Tax litigation often turns on technical procedural details, and strict deadlines can make all the difference.

CRA auditors have broad but not unlimited powers.

In a recent case, our client faced an audit request that was overly broad and burdensome. When the client was unable to meet all audit demands, the CRA threatened to seek a Court order to enforce full compliance.

Our tax lawyers stepped in, engaged with the auditors and with the Department of Justice lawyers, and successfully narrowed the scope of the request. This made the audit process more manageable and less disruptive for the client’s business.

If you are dealing with a CRA audit that feels overwhelming, overly broad or unclear, it’s crucial to know your rights as a taxpayer. Our tax lawyers are here to help!

Be Prepared for the 2025 Tax Season: Key Dates Inside ⏰

As we head into the 2025 tax filing season, it’s important to be aware of the critical deadlines and best practices to avoid penalties, interest, and unnecessary stress.

🗓 February 23, 2026 - Online Filing Opens

This is the first day you can file your 2025 income tax and benefit return online with the CRA.
If you’re an early filer, pause before hitting “submit” and make sure you have all required tax slips:
🍁 Most slips (T4s, T5s, RRSP receipts, etc.) are issued by employers and financial institutions by the end of February.
🍁 If you have a CRA My Account, you may be able to access copies of your slips there once the CRA has processed them.
🍁 If you’re still missing slips by the end of March, contact the issuer directly to request a copy.

🗓 April 30, 2026 - Filing & Payment Deadline

This is the deadline for most individuals to:
🍁 File their 2025 income tax and benefit return, and
🍁 Pay any balance owing.

Filing and paying on time helps you avoid:
🍁 Late-filing penalties
🍁 Daily compounded interest on unpaid taxes

🗓 June 15, 2026 - Self-Employed Filing Deadline

If you are self-employed, or if your spouse or common-law partner is self-employed, you have until June 15, 2026 to file your return.

⚠️ Important: Even though the filing deadline is later, any taxes owed must still be paid by April 30, 2026 to avoid interest charges.
