ACT Skilled Migration Nomination Program Now Open!

The ACT Government has officially opened its Skilled Migration Nomination Program for the 2025–26 program year. Eligible applicants—including Canberra residents, overseas applicants, and PhD holders—can now submit a Canberra Matrix to express interest in ACT nomination.

Eligibility Criteria

Canberra Residents
To follow this pathway, you must be living in Canberra. You cannot apply for the ACT nomination if you do not meet the following:
- ACT 491 nomination: Living and working in Canberra for at least three months.
- ACT 190 nomination: Living and working in Canberra for at least six months.
- You cannot apply if:
- You are living interstate or overseas.
- Any dependents are living and/or working interstate.

Overseas Applicants
To follow this pathway, you and any dependents must not be living in Australia (except children enrolled in an ACT school). You cannot apply if you do not meet the following:

- ACT 491 nomination: At least one year of relevant experience in your nominated occupation.
- ACT 190 nomination: At least three years of relevant experience in your nominated occupation.
- You cannot apply if you are living in Australia.

Doctorate Streamlined Nomination

To follow this pathway, you must meet the following:
- Canberra resident: Living in Canberra and completed a research or professional Doctoral degree at an ACT university.
- Interstate/Overseas applicant: Awarded a research or professional Doctoral degree from an ACT university within the last two years.
- You cannot apply if you did not study at an ACT university.

Significant Economic Benefit
You may be invited to apply for ACT nomination if your employment is considered to be of significant economic benefit to the Territory—even if you do not meet the current eligibility criteria. This pathway cannot be requested or applied for. Invitations are only initiated by the ACT Government.

Canberra Matrix
The Canberra Matrix is a merit-based assessment tool used to fairly manage the nomination process. You can score points for your economic and/or social contribution to Canberra, including:

- Length of ACT residence
- Occupation and employment
- Business activity
- English proficiency
- Study history
- Investment
- Close family ties

Your Matrix will be ranked based on the points claimed. High-ranking applicants will receive an invitation by email with a link to apply online.

Important:
- Supporting documents must prove eligibility and the claimed Matrix score at the time of submission.
- Applications that do not meet published criteria will be refused.
- There is no guarantee your Matrix will be ranked, even if you meet eligibility.

One Nomination Place per Person Policy
- Only one nomination place is offered per person.
- If successfully nominated for a 491 or 190 visa, you cannot apply again for another ACT nomination.
- Reapplication is only allowed:
- If applying for the same visa subclass.
- If you meet the eligibility criteria.
- Exceptions may be made only at the ACT Government’s discretion in exceptional circumstances.

Service Fee
A non-refundable $300 service fee applies to all ACT nomination applications.
This fee is for administration only and does not guarantee approval.

Victoria’s Skilled Migration Program 2025–2026 Is Now Open!

NEWS: Tasmania Receives Interim Skilled Migration Allocation Ahead of 2025–26 Program Year

Hobart, 5 September 2025 — Migration Tasmania has confirmed an interim allocation of skilled visa nomination places from the Australian Government, providing a critical opportunity for provisionally approved applicants awaiting finalisation.

A total of 165 nomination places have been granted:

- Subclass 190 (Skilled Nominated Visa): 85 places
- Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional Visa): 80 places

This allocation will be used to finalise nominations for applicants who received provisional approval during the 2024–25 program year but were not nominated due to capacity limits. Priority will be given to Subclass 190 applicants whose current visas are expiring or who are on Bridging visas.

📌 The full allocation for the 2025–26 program year is expected to be announced in the coming weeks, along with the reopening of Tasmania’s skilled migration program.

🎉 Migration Update – South Australia Receives Interim Allocation for 2025–26! 🇦🇺

Exciting news for skilled migrants! The Commonwealth Government has granted South Australia a **small interim allocation** for the 2025–26 program year 🎯.

📌 Due to the limited number of places, Skilled and Business Migration (SBM) will not open new Registrations of Interest (ROI) just yet. Instead, priority will be given to strong candidates already contributing to South Australia’s workforce—especially those who submitted ROIs during the 2024–25 cycle.

Updated English Benchmark Scores for Australian Visas 🇦🇺

If you're applying for an Australian visa, meeting the right English language level is essential. As of 7 August 2025, the Department of Home Affairs has updated the score requirements across all accepted English tests.

Here’s what you need to know for the three key levels:

✅ Competent English

To meet the Competent level, you’ll need scores like:
- IELTS: 6.0 in each component
- PTE Academic: Listening 47, Reading 48, Writing 51, Speaking 54
- TOEFL iBT: Listening 16, Reading 16, Writing 19, Speaking 19
- OET: Scores around 290–330
- CELPIP: Level 7 in each skill
- LANGUAGECERT: Scores around 57–70
- Cambridge C1 Advanced: Scores around 163–179

✅ Proficient English

For the Proficient level, aim for:
- IELTS: 7.0 in each component
- PTE Academic: Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 69, Speaking 76
- TOEFL iBT: Listening 22, Reading 22, Writing 26, Speaking 24
- OET: Scores around 350–370

📣 New English Exams Now Accepted for Australian Visas 🇦🇺

Starting 7 August 2025, the Department of Home Affairs has expanded its list of approved English tests for visa applications. Whether you're applying for a student, skilled, or partner visa, you now have more options to prove your English proficiency!

🆕 Newly Accepted Tests:

- LANGUAGECERT Academic 📝
- Michigan English Test (MET) 🎓

These join existing tests like IELTS, PTE, TOEFL iBT, and OET.

📊 Updated Score Requirements

Big News: Changes to English Language Requirements for Australian Immigration 🇦🇺
Starting 7 August 2025, the Department of Home Affairs has updated the English test options and score requirements for visa applicants. If you're applying for a Student, Temporary Graduate, or Skilled visa, here’s what you need to know:
🎯 What’s Changing?
✅ New English Tests Accepted
You can now use the following tests to meet your English requirement:
- CELPIP General
- LANGUAGECERT Academic
- Michigan English Test (MET)
- IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR)
- Cambridge C1 Advanced (still accepted for some levels)
📉 Score Adjustments
Some tests now have lower score thresholds, making it easier to meet the requirements. For example:
- PTE Academic now requires a score of 24 for Functional English (previously 30)
- TOEFL iBT now requires a score of 26 for Functional English (previously 32)
- MET and LANGUAGECERT are now accepted with scores starting from 38 for Functional English
📌 Important Notes
- These changes apply to tests taken on or after 7 August 2025
- Tests taken before 6 August 2025 may still be valid for up to 3 years, depending on your visa type
- IELTS One Skill Retake is now accepted for certain visa categories

2024-25 WA STATE NOMINATION PROGRAM

Here are the key points to remember:
- There is no application fee.
- Both interstate and overseas candidates receive equal invitation ranking.
- Candidates with an occupation in a Western Australia (WA) industry sector with a critical demand for skilled workers will receive prioritized invitations.
- Candidates invited through a WA building and construction industry sector occupation (as classified on the WA State nomination occupation lists) will have reduced employment requirements.
- Additional employment contract arrangements are available for General Stream: Western Australian Skilled Migration Occupation List (WASMOL) schedule 1.

Temporary Graduate Visa Proposed Changes

In accordance with its Migration Strategy, the Australian Government has announced that changes will be made to the Temporary Graduate visa programs. These changes are set to be implemented from 1 July 2024, subject to legislative authorization. A breakdown of these changes is provided below.
1. Graduate Work Stream Renamed:
Please see the updated information below regarding the Post-Vocational Education Work stream:
- The Graduate Work stream has been renamed to the Post-Vocational Education Work stream.
• The Graduate Work stream has been renamed to the Post-Vocational Education Work stream.
• The maximum eligible age for applicants has been reduced to 35 years old, with the exception of Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders who can apply until they are 50 years old.
• To be eligible, applicants must hold an associate degree, diploma, or trade qualification that is relevant to the occupation they are applying for and is listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).
• If you hold a degree, you will no longer qualify under this stream and should instead apply through the Post-Higher Education Workstream.
• The stay period remains up to 18 months, except for Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders who may stay for up to 5 years.

2. Post-Study Work Stream Renamed:
• The Post-Study Work stream has been renamed as the Post-Higher Education Workstream.
• The maximum age limit for eligibility has been reduced to 35 years, except for Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders who can apply until they are 50 years old.
• The option of a 2-year extension for the select degree has been discontinued.
• The allowed stay periods have been revised as follows:
o up to 2 years for a Bachelor's degree,
o up to 2 years for Masters (coursework and extended), and
o up to 3 years for Masters (research) and doctoral degree (PhD).
• The stay periods for Indian nationals remain unchanged as agreed under the Australian Indian – Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA).

3. Second Post-Study Work Stream Renamed:
The program previously known as the Second Post-Study Work stream will be renamed as the Second Post-Higher Education Workstream. It is important to note that there are no additional updates or modifications to this program beyond this change in nomenclature.

4. Replacement Stream Discontinued:
The Replacement stream will no longer be available.
