From 1 November 2021, fully vaccinated parents of Australian citizens and permanent residents will be exempt from Australia’s travel restrictions. Travel exemption applications are now opened!!

Applications opened on Friday for travel to Australia starting 1 November, when various parental relationships will be included in the definition of "immediate family".

Moving forward after the pandemic - Labor’s push to clear backlog of spouse and partner visas and to increase grant numbers. There are currently 90,000 applications in the system waiting to be processed with less than 40,000 applications granted in 2018-2019.

A Labor MP has called on the government to issue tens of thousands more spouse and partner visas.

The South Australian government has released details on its Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA) including the list of eligible skilled occupations. This is very exciting news for SA employers and skilled migrants.

Applications for SA DAMA will commence from 1 July 2019. There will be given priority processing with the Department of Home Affairs as well as various concessions such as the age requirement, temporary skilled migration income threshold, skills and experience and the level of English language requirement. The SA DAMA also offers a pathway to permanent residency.

PARTNER VISA CHANGES PUT ON HOLD - We have been notified by the Department of Home Affairs that the new sponsorship framework for the partner scheduled to commence on 17 April 2019 visa has been put on hold. The new changes to the sponsored family visas will only be implemented for the new sponsored parent (temporary) 870 visa at this stage. We will keep you posted about the time-frame for the expansion of the new sponsorship framework to the partner visa when announced!

The Department has announced that the base visa application charges will be increased by 5.4% on 1 July 2019.

PARTNER VISA CHANGES - EFFECTIVE 17 APRIL 2019

The new partner visa changes will commence from 17 April 2019. Partner visa sponsorships will need to be approved before partner visa applications can be lodged.

Sponsors will be required to undertake mandatory police and character checks as part of their sponsorship application. A refusal of sponsorship application may occur if the sponsor has a history of violence.

The waiting period for the sponsorship approval by the Department of Home Affairs may result in longer time frames to migrate a partner. These changes will impact offshore and onshore partner visas in different ways.
