John Bray Alumni Network The John Bray Alumni Network is a forum by which University of Adelaide law alumni can both connect and be involved with the Law School and other law alumni.

The objectives of the John Bray Alumni Network are to support students and future students of the Adelaide Law School, provide networking opportunities for Adelaide Law School graduates, assist with the professional development of graduates and promote the Adelaide Law School.

We are excited to welcome Sarah Barker tonight to talk about Directors' Duties and Climate Change!

Sarah is a Managing Director at Pollination Law and leads the climate and sustainability risk governance team. She was previously a Partner at the Asia-Pacific’s largest commercial law firm, MinterEllison. Sarah has more than twenty-five years’ experience as a corporate lawyer, and is regarded as one of the world’s foremost experts on climate change governance, finance and liability risks.

She is Co-Chair of the World Economic Forum’s Global Futures Council on Climate & Nature Governance, teaches the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership’s non-executive directors’ programme and AICD’s Climate Governance programme.​ Sarah is ranked in Band 1 by Chambers (Asia Pacific) and is recognised in the Best Lawyers Guide in both the Corporate Law and Climate Change Law areas of practice.

Meet our speaker for next Tuesday's Animal Law CLE: Frankie Bray!

Frankie is a PhD candidate at the Adelaide Law School. Her research is in the field of animal law – specifically, the operation of the Animal Welfare Regulations in SA. She was involved in the consultation process which led to the drafting of the Animal Welfare Act 2025 (SA) and has also conducted a historical analysis of the Act.

Frankie is the Deputy Chair of the Animal Law Committee of the Law Society of SA and sits on the Executive Committee of the Australasian Animal Law Teachers and Researchers Association (AALTRA).

She was awarded the 2024 RSPA Sybil Emslie Animal Law scholarship and has recently completed a research internship with the RSPCA SA. Frankie worked in health law and family law before ceasing practise to commence her post-graduate studies, and she also teaches at the Adelaide Law School in Foundations of Law, Medical Law and Ethics, International Law and Family Law.

Meet the Chair of our Fact-Finding in Appellate Courts CLE: Damian O'Leary SC!

Damian O'Leary SC practices in all areas of public and general commercial law and has specific expertise in administrative, constitutional, electoral, migration, native title and discrimination law. Prior to joining the independent bar in 2016, Damian was counsel in the crown counsel section of the Crown Solicitor’s Office (SA) and prior to that worked at the Australian Government Solicitor in Canberra and the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department. Between 2009 and 2011, Damian was Counsel Assisting the then Commonwealth Solicitor-General, Stephen Gageler SC. He appears regularly in both Federal and State jurisdiction.

Introducing our final speaker for our upcoming CLE: Dr Joe McIntyre!

Dr Joe McIntyre is an Associate Professor at the University of South Australia, who specialises in judicial theory and legal institutions. He has previously taught in Canada and the UK, and worked for the SA Crown-Solicitor’s Office before entering academia. His book ‘The Judicial Function’ was published in 2019 and built upon his PhD dissertation undertaken at the University of Cambridge.

His work spans a range of disciplinary boundaries, including constitutional and administrative law, legal theory, civil justice and socio-legal studies. His recent works has looked at diverse topics such as judicial independence, judicial discipline and justice technology, and most relevantly on the impacts of legal illiteracy on the administration of justice. He is co-editor of ‘Sovereign Citizens and Pseudolaw’ published in February 2025.

Introducing our second speaker for Thursday's CLE: Dr Anne Carter!

Dr Anne Carter is a Senior Lecturer at Adelaide Law School. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Adelaide, the BCL and MPhil at the University of Oxford and a PhD at University of Melbourne. Her PhD research investigated the role of facts in proportionality reasoning in constitutional law, and was subsequently published. She has also recently published an edited collection (with Joe Tomlinson, York University) on Facts in Public Law Adjudication.

Anne has research interests in public law, evidence law and comparative law, and has published both in Australia and internationally. Prior to becoming an academic Anne worked as a practising lawyer and judge’s associate.

Meet our first speaker for next week's CLE: Dr Anna Olijnyk!

Dr Anna Olijnyk is a Senior Lecturer at Adelaide Law School, University of Adelaide. She teaches and researches in the field of public law. Her research focuses on the role of courts in relation to the other branches of government: a topic that encompasses elements of constitutional law, administrative law and procedure. She is Director of the Public Law and Policy Research Unit and Convenor of the SA Chapter of the Australian Association of Constitutional Law.

We are looking for to having Dr Ryan Catterwell present tonight's CLE Session on Contract Law Current Issues: Informal Contracts, Repudiation, and Damages.

Ryan is a barrister at Howard Zelling Chambers, an adjunct Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland and a tutor at the University of Adelaide. He specialises in commercial matters, in particular, those involving contracts. He is the General Editor of the Journal of Contract Law and holds a PhD in contract interpretation from the University of Sydney. He is widely published on contract law and related matters both in Australia and overseas, including a book published by Hart (Oxford).
