Government welcomes Auditor-General's report on the Housing Australia Future Fund

The Auditor-General has reviewed the Housing Australia Future Fund, finding Treasury's design largely effective while flagging five areas for improvement.

Housing Minister Clare O'Neil this week welcomed the report, noting Treasury has accepted all five recommendations. The Auditor-General found the design was backed by largely sound policy advice and said Treasury had kept improving the program.

The five recommendations cover governance, risk management, and public reporting — practical tightening rather than a finding of fundamental failure.

O'Neil said the fund is operating in "one of the toughest construction markets in decades", as building and financing costs rose since its launch. Treasury flagged those pressures early, she said, and the government acted to protect its housing commitment.

The government's target remains 55,000 social and affordable homes by the end of the decade, delivered with Housing Australia, the states and territories, community housing providers, and industry.

Call to subsidise property cover to keep owners insured

Property insurance costs in high-risk regions are rising fast enough that some homeowners may soon be priced out of coverage entirely.

Experts are calling for subsidised property insurance to keep owners in the insurance net, according to an AFR report.

Paula Jarzabkowski, professor of strategic management at the University of Queensland Business School, said a subsidy scheme would help address ballooning premiums in high-risk areas.

But subsidies come with a trade-off, she noted: they would blunt the price signal that insurance costs send to homeowners and developers about where and how to build. Cheaper cover in a flood or fire zone may reduce the financial disincentive to build or buy there.
