A win against exit trafficking -- an overlooked federal crime.

What happens when someone is deceived into leaving Australia, only to find themselves stranded overseas with no lawful pathway to return?

In our latest article, Senior Lawyer Stephanie Vejar shares the story of โ€œMayaโ€*, a victim-survivor of exit trafficking, and how MSM Legal assisted her in obtaining permanent residency offshore so she could return to Australia.

Exit trafficking is a federal crime, yet many cases remain unprosecuted and unresolved. This case highlights the urgent need for greater awareness, accountability and fairer immigration pathways for victim-survivors.

Migration policy is changing โ€ฆ and more changes may be on the way.

The Government is expected to introduce further measures aimed at managing Australiaโ€™s migration program. Reports indicate that potential changes could include tighter settings around family visas, temporary migration and some visa pathways.

However, nothing has been confirmed to mean that particular onshore visa pathways are closing.

The details are still being developed, with Home Affairs Minister Tony Burkeโ€™s planned National Press Club address postponed while elements of the proposed changes are finalised.

If you are currently in Australia and considering an onshore visa application, this is a good time to review your circumstances and understand:

โœ”๏ธ Whether you have a valid pathway
โœ”๏ธ Any visa conditions that may affect your options
โœ”๏ธ Whether timing could be important
โœ”๏ธ What alternatives may be available to you

Donโ€™t make a decision based on headlines alone. Immigration law is highly dependent on your individual circumstances.

๐Ÿ“ข New Financial Year. New Visa & Citizenship Fees.

From 1 July 2026, the Australian Government has introduced significant increases to Visa Application Charges (VAC) across many visa subclasses.

While annual fee increases are common, this year's changes are substantially higher than previous CPI-based adjustments, with some visa categories increasing by over 200%.

Our graphic highlights some of the key visa fee changes you should be aware of.

If you're considering lodging a visa application, seeking review through the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART), or commencing migration judicial review proceedings in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (FCFCOA) or Federal Court of Australia (FCA), please note that not only are there strict timelimits on lodging these, the lodgement fees will increase on 1 July 2026.

Annual indexation is expected to affect:

* Department of Home Affairs Visa Application Charges
* Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) fees
* Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (FCFCOA) filing fees
* Federal Court of Australia (FCA) filing fees

Lodging before the increase could help you avoid paying higher government charges.
