I started Dowley Family Law a bit over five years ago. My vision at that time was to help anyone who needed legal assistance with family law matters, regardless of their financial means. I tailored packages to clients' individual circumstances, often significantly discounting the overall cost. I am proud that I have been able to help the clients that 'fell through the cracks' between being eligible for legal aid and being able to afford a private lawyer.

I started Dowley Family Law just before I welcomed our second child. I took a short maternity leave and returned as soon as I could, partly through financial need at the time and partly because growing DFL was incredibly important to me. I have operated DFL through many ups and downs. Many times I was not as available to my family as I wanted to be due to work commitments.

Last year was a strange and difficult one for many of us. For our family it had a silver lining - we welcomed our third child, Archer. Having a third child has tipped the scales between personal and professional and I have had to make the decision to wind down DFL, at least for now. I am taking extended maternity leave and will not return before July 2022, and at this stage I am not entirely sure whether I will return at all.

If you are still waiting for work from me, do not worry, I will get to this before winding up.

It has been an absolute privilege to be trusted by my clients with their most sensitive and personal information, to be able to help when they are at their most vulnerable. I will be continuing this with mediation work at the very least for Relationships Australia from mid to late 2022. I will miss the freedom of working for myself, but am looking forward to being able to walk away from work when my family needs me, knowing that I am not letting clients down.

With the impacts of COVID-19, I am currently working from home with my mediation work and DFL, and 'homeschooling' our 8 year old + looking after our 3 year old. Unfortunately this situation has left me with very limited time and I am currently unable to take on any new clients. I appreciate every referral and am disappointed I am currently unable to help.

DFL is looking for a family lawyer to work from home 20 hours per week (with further increases to hours a possibility if sought by the candidate). Over December/January I ran a charity will special. 17 people made wills during that time and today I donated $10 for each will to Mission Australia, which will be used for their Winter appeal. I will run another charity will special early in the new financial year. If you have any charities close to your heart I welcome suggestions!

Who am I?

Many of you are existing clients or know me in real life, but many of you haven’t met me before.

So here is a brief* introduction. My name is Robyn, I am the ‘Dowley’ of Dowley Family Law. I run the business from home completely solo at the moment. I will soon be hiring a legal secretary to assist me.

I have been practising in family law since 2010 and hold a Master of Laws majoring in family law and family dispute resolution. I will soon be offering family mediation services to separating couples.

I have worked in disability advocacy and understand very well the trials and tribulations of the NDIS and the added complexity of disability in family law matters.

That’s the boring professional stuff. I also am married and have two beautiful children aged 2 and 7. I have two dogs who unfortunately don’t get quite as much attention since the children came along.

I enjoy running and am training for a half marathon. I am a huge nerd! I am a member of a science fiction and fantasy book club for women and adore Harry Potter, Doctor Who and Outlander.

Coffee is life. I plan my days around when I can buy coffee.

I really dislike systems and people who believe that some people are more important than others due to income, education etc. everyone is important. Everyone should have access to the same opportunities for justice, education and quality of life.

I am practising law because I love it and want to help others. That is my driving force and why I operate my law firm a little.... differently to more traditional firms.
