The student legal advisors at the Adelaide Legal Outreach Service (ALOS) have been hard at work over the second semester of 2023! Working one day per week over the course of thirteen weeks, they have been conducting interviews and managing their own practices to provide legal assistance to ALOS clients. The team at ALOS has put together some semester-end statistics and client feedback to share with everyone to show all the good work being done by the students.

Since 2022, the Office of the Commissioner for Equal Opportunity (OCEO) has run ‘We’re Equal’ - a project designed to educate customers, workplaces and employees about anti-discrimination practices so that workplaces can be inclusive; allowing everyone who interacts with them to thrive as much as possible.

This is more than a performative statement of intent - the resources on the ‘We’re Equal’ page not only provide a roadmap to empower all stakeholders, but allows collaboration between employers and the OCEO.

The Equal Opportunity Legal Advice Service (EOLAS) team continue to be proud supporters of this OCEO initiative to create a more inclusive, caring South Australia.

Today, our student legal advisors from the Equal Opportunity Legal Advice Service (EOLAS) were hosted for a morning tea by the Office of the Commissioner for Equal Opportunity (OCEO). As usual, the Commissioner Jodeen Carney, Assistant Commissioner Colin Marsh and other OCEO staff made us very welcome.

We were also joined by other guest speakers from the Attorney-General’s Department: Alison Doecke SC of the Crown Counsel Section at the Crown Solicitor’s Office and Fiona Williams-Mitchell, Director of Legislative Services.

We learned about the non-linear career paths and range of career choices open to law graduates within the Attorney-General’s Department. Alison Doecke SC eloquently spoke about the importance of balancing work and family life, emphasising how parenting made her a better advocate with the support of her workplace and family. Fiona discussed how her legal background helps her with complex policy negotiations and consultation on Bills presented before Parliament, noting that bipartisanship, robust debate and clear arguments create effective legislation. The EOLAS team were invited to ask questions about the nature of working within the Attorney-General’s Department and how the work aligned with their personal and professional aspirations.

EOLAS hopes to maintain its strong relationship with the OCEO in assisting individuals to realise their human rights in the face of discrimination.
