VICTORIA’S NEW 2026–27 POINTS TEST 🇦🇺

VISA HOLDERS: CHECK YOUR HEALTH INSURANCE 🇦🇺

Home Affairs has released updated guidance on adequate health insurance for Australian visa applicants and visa holders.

Most temporary visa holders and visitors are not eligible for Medicare and may be responsible for their full healthcare costs. Depending on the visa, maintaining adequate health insurance may also be a visa condition.

Before travelling, renewing or changing cover, check:
• Your policy covers your intended stay
• Your cover is appropriate for your visa
• You understand exclusions and waiting periods
• You continue meeting any insurance-related visa condition

Need guidance about your visa conditions?

The Department of Home Affairs has announced that the next Skilled Independent (subclass 189) invitation round will be held on 15 October 2026.

If you already have a SkillSelect EOI, check it now:
• Confirm your points claim is accurate
• Update English results, skills assessment and work history
• Check that assessments and documents remain valid
• Keep evidence ready for every point claimed

Important: An EOI does not guarantee an invitation. This announcement relates to subclass 189 and does not confirm a state-nomination round for subclasses 190 or 491.

🚨 MAJOR STUDENT VISA CHANGES FROM 2 OCTOBER 2026

Australia has introduced significant new rules affecting Student visas (subclass 500), Student Guardian visas (subclass 590), family members and provider transfers.

Key changes include:

✈️ Most Student visa applications must now be lodged outside Australia.

🎓 Most current Student visa holders applying for another Student visa must apply offshore unless they meet a limited exemption.

⛔ Holders of specified visas—including subclasses 400, 407, 408, 417, 462, 482, 485 and several visitor visas—cannot lodge a Student visa application while in Australia.

👨‍👩‍👧 Most applicants can no longer include partners or dependent children unless an exemption applies.

❌ Family members cannot apply later as subsequent entrants.

📍 If you are required to apply offshore, you must generally also be outside Australia when the visa is granted.

📄 An offshore application does not provide a Bridging visa in Australia.

🏫 Until 30 June 2027, most non-school international students generally need to complete 12 months of their principal course before transferring providers. Limited exceptions continue to apply.

Applications lodged before 2 October 2026 continue under the rules applying when they were lodged.

These changes can affect your visa timing, course selection, travel plans and whether your family can accompany you.

Before changing courses, paying enrolment fees or travelling outside Australia, obtain advice about your specific circumstances.

🚨 SOUTH AUSTRALIA DAMA UPDATE

South Australia’s two existing Designated Area Migration Agreements have been extended for a further four months—until 31 January 2027.

The extension applies while negotiations continue for a proposed new five-year statewide DAMA.

✅ Both current SA DAMAs have been extended
✅ Existing terms and conditions remain unchanged
✅ Further information about the new DAMA and transition arrangements is still to come

This update may be relevant if you are:

• A South Australian employer experiencing genuine skills shortages
• Considering an occupation or concession available under a DAMA
• Working through an existing endorsement or labour agreement
• Planning an employer-sponsored migration pathway

Important: The extension does not automatically make an employer, position or applicant eligible. Relevant requirements must still be satisfied.

Want to understand how this update may affect your plans?
