The rhythmic sound of the drums could be heard from a distance. The methodical and serenading distinct sound of the music was reverberating through the valley across Mukuro river. It was around mid morning and the sun was shining brightly above Tarumbwa's homestead. It was a warm autumn morning. Birds could be heard singing melodiously in the nearby bush. One could literally touch the serenity and aura of peace and tranquility that was prevailing in the neighbourhood.

There was a beer party at Tarumbwa's homestead in Shurishwa village. A middle-aged stout man with a protruding belly was vigorously beating the drum with both hands. He was enjoying himself ; completely and utterly buried in a trance. Occasionally, he would lift up his head to look at the small crowd of beer drinkers who were dancing to his drumbeat, most of whom were now evidently sloshed. His eyes were fixated on a well-rounded and garrulous woman, Gadzingo. Gadzingo was a bundle of energy. She would gyrate and suggestively wiggle her waist dancing to the drumbeat as the drummer eased himself into singing the traditional song "Chamutengure vhiri rengoro". Shangudze could be seen holding a traditional cup full of traditional beer. Now and again, he would take a sip, look at Gadzingo and smile to himself. God knows what was taking place in Shangudze's mind.

Late yesterday afternoon, I was driving home from work along Borrowdale Road, Harare, when I saw a white Rolls-Royce Cullinan cruising on the next lane along the same road, heading towards the same direction as I was.

Shangudze is a senior bachelor. A seemingly rebellious character who finds regular comfort in imbibing the local traditional alcoholic brew, he lives in a simple world. Shangudze has got an uncanny aversion to the material things of life. He owns a few clothes and blankets, including a simple single bed. He is happy that way. Many villagers don't quite seem to understand him. In fact, in certain quarters, you can hear whispers that Shangudze is of unsound mind, that he is a mad man. Shangudze is anything but mad. He is just an eccentric senior bachelor who occasionally smokes w**d and takes regular naps on top of a rock in the nearby hill. Shangudze leads a typically unconventional life. He has no intention to marry but it's rumored that he has got a girlfriend, a village widow with whom he seems to hang around a lot. Shangudze is the only child of Tarumbwa and Mhurai.

They don't come more beautiful than Mhurai. She's a dark and lovely beauty, now aging gracefully but her breathtaking beauty is still unmistakable. She is a rather chatty but very confident and resolute woman. She is the family matriach, the "go to" person for the resolution of all family disputes and misunderstandings. Mhurai speaks with a husky and authoritative voice. In the whole village and beyond, she is well-respected for her motherly love and affection. To Mhurai, every young person is her child. She is blessed with a very large heart and stunning physical beauty, a very, very rare combination indeed. Mhurai is Tarumbwa's wife. The couple has been happily married for more than four decades.

Tarumbwa is the village head. He is an elderly man who walks with a slight stoop. He is a man of very few words and it is extremely difficult to read his emotions. His facial expressions are rather misleading. Most of his time, Tarumbwa is entrapped in his own world. He is an introspect who only hangs around with very few friends. Typically, he always wears a rather wry smile on his face. He is apparently an enigma. For some reason, Tarumbwa is largely a loner who seems to enjoy his own company. His world is slow but invariably peaceful. Tarumbwa minds his own business. Basically, he is a good guy.
