Understanding Your Employment Contract

Starting a new job is exciting, but don’t let the excitement make you skip the fine print.

Before signing an employment contract, make sure you understand:

📄 Your job title & duties — What exactly are you being employed to do?

💰 Your salary & benefits — Know your basic salary, allowances, bonuses and payment arrangements.

⏰ Working hours — Check your normal working hours and arrangements for overtime, weekends and public holidays.

🏖️ Leave — Understand your applicable leave entitlements.

⏳ Probation — Know how long your probation lasts and what happens when it ends.

🚪 Termination & notice — Understand how the employment relationship can legally come to an end.

💡 Remember:

A contract is more than a piece of paper. It sets out the terms of your working relationship.

DON’T JUST LOOK AT THE SALARY!

That exciting “You’re hired!” call can make anyone want to say YES! immediately. 😂

But before you sign on the dotted line, take a moment to check the details:

📄 The Contract — Read and understand every important term.

💰 The Pay — Know your salary, allowances, deductions, benefits and when you’ll be paid.

⏰ Working Hours — Check your normal hours, overtime and weekend/public holiday arrangements.

🏖️ Leave — Understand your leave entitlements and how they work.

📌 Your Role — Make sure your duties, responsibilities and reporting lines are clear.

⏳ Probation — Know how long it lasts and what happens during or after it.

🚪 Termination — Understand the notice periods and conditions for ending the employment relationship.

⚖️ Your Rights — Know the employment protections that apply to you.

Most importantly: Don’t be afraid to ask questions about anything you don’t understand.

Our team proudly took part in the Law Society of Zimbabwe Justice Run, and what a day it was! 🙌🏾

From the first step to the finish line, we ran, laughed, challenged ourselves and, most importantly, conquered the run! 🏅🔥

The weekend is here, so here are a few very serious instructions:

Have fun — but know your limit. Your lawyer shouldn’t be your first call because you tried to become the weekend’s action hero.

Spend wisely. Monday-you still has bills.

Think before you post. The screenshot never forgets!

If you drink, DON’T drive. Find a sober driver or another safe way home.

Choose peace. Not every argument needs a sequel.

And most importantly… make memories, not legal cases!
