Our Legal Assistants, Luyando Deuce Katanta Malundu, and Walusungu Chikopa, recently attended the Data Protection Symposium held under the theme:

“Strengthening Legal Compliance, Organisational Responsibility, and Digital Trust to Safeguard Individual Rights and Support Sustainable Economic Growth Under the Data Protection Act of 2021."

Some of their key takeaways included:

1. Cybersecurity is the foundation of data protection. Privacy is a promise, but cybersecurity is how organizations keep that promise. Effective data protection is ultimately about protecting people, not just information.

2. Data minimization matters. Organizations should collect only the personal data they truly need. The less data retained, the lower the risk of exposure in the event of a breach.

3. Trust is hard earned and easily lost. A single data breach can have lasting reputational, financial, and regulatory consequences.

4. Artificial intelligence presents both opportunities and risks. One emerging challenge is Shadow AI, which is the unauthorized use of AI tools within organizations, which can expose sensitive information and create significant compliance risks.

5. Data protection must be operationalized. Strong governance goes beyond written policies by embedding privacy controls into IT Service Management (ITSM) processes, ensuring every interaction with personal data is documented, traceable, and auditable.

Our associate, Bupe-Kunda Kauseni attended the ALN Associates Weekend in Diani, Kenya from 30th May – 1st June 2026, joining associates from across the ALN for three days of learning, collaboration and future-focused discussions.

Held under the theme, “The Next Frontier: Rethink, Redefine, Reinvent,” the programme challenged participants to look beyond the traditional boundaries of legal practice and explore what it means to thrive in an era increasingly shaped by technology and artificial intelligence.

Reflecting on the experience, Bupe shared:

"One of my biggest takeaways was that technology is phasing out the single-discipline lawyer, but it cannot replace trusted advisors. To remain relevant, lawyers must combine use of technology with human judgment, commercial awareness, and a deep understanding of local markets, geopolitics and regulatory environments."

The weekend provided a valuable platform to exchange ideas with peers from across the ALN network, build meaningful connections, and explore how the legal profession can continue to evolve to meet the needs of clients in a rapidly changing world.
