Red flag or green flag?
· “We can discuss payment later.”
· “Either party may terminate on 24 hours’ notice.”
· “Any dispute must be resolved in writing before action is taken.”

Some clauses are helpful. Others deserve a very close read. The safest contracts are the ones that are clear before there is a problem, not after.

Not sure which clauses are which? Get them reviewed before you sign.

Most people seek a second opinion before major medical procedures yet many make significant business and personal decisions without obtaining legal guidance.

Some examples include:
• Signing a long term lease
• Entering a business partnership
• Purchasing property
• Accepting investment opportunities
• Hiring senior employees
• Agreeing to large contracts

The cost of reviewing a decision beforehand is often far less than the cost of correcting a mistake afterwards. A legal review is not about slowing progress. It is about identifying risks, clarifying obligations, and ensuring there are no surprises hidden in the fine print.
The best legal advice is often the advice obtained before a problem arises.

Posting online feels instant. The legal consequences can be too. In Zambia, defamatory statements made on social media can attract the same liability as statements made offline. This includes posts, comments, shares, and reposts, as they are treated as publication under defamation law.

According to the Zambian Penal Code (Cap 87), defamation refers to any matter likely to injure a person’s reputation by exposing them to hatred, contempt, or ridicule.
Before you hit publish, ask yourself:
· Is it true?
· Can I prove it?
· Could it harm someone’s reputation?
When in doubt, pause and seek advice rather than posting in the heat of the moment. A quick post can have lasting consequences.

Lending money to friends or family can feel informal, but it should never be undocumented. Before handing over funds, make sure you agree on:
· The exact amount
· The repayment date
· How repayment will be made
· A written acknowledgement or simple loan agreement.

Clear terms protect both the relationship and your finances. Written documentation also makes it easier to enforce repayment if problems arise.

For a will to be valid in Zambia, the person making it must have legal capacity, act voluntarily, and sign it in the presence of at least two independent witnesses. A properly executed will helps ensure your wishes are respected and can minimise disputes among loved ones.

Estate planning is not just for later. It is for peace of mind today.

Consider speaking to a lawyer to ensure your will meets the legal requirements.

Understanding Zambia's New Non-Bailable Offences:

Zambia's criminal law has recently undergone a significant change. The Criminal Procedure Code (Amendment) Act No. 4 of 2026 has expanded the list of non-bailable offences to include crimes such as r**e, defilement, in**st, stock theft, theft of medicines, theft of strategic minerals, and damage to critical infrastructure.

What does this mean?

Individuals charged with these offences will generally not be eligible for bail while awaiting trial. This amendment has important implications for accused persons, their families, and the broader justice system.

Understanding changes in the law is essential, especially when they directly affect personal rights and liberties.
