HOW MANY GRADUATES FROM EACH ZAMBIAN UNIVERSITY HAVE PASSED THE LPQE (BAR EXAMS)?

Lawyer's Space compiled pass counts for the Legal Practitioners' Qualifying Examination (Bar exams) from the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education annual reports, covering first-attempt passes and repeaters passes.

The University of Zambia leads the first attempt pass count (64) followed by The University of Lusaka (33) & Zambia open university (12)

THE MEANING AND SIGNIFICANCE OF TAKING SILK IN THE LEGAL PROFESSION

Taking silk refers to the formal appointment of an advocate to the rank of King’s Counsel (KC) or Queen’s Counsel (QC), depending on the reigning monarch. The expression originates from the traditional practice whereby a senior advocate replaced the ordinary gown worn by junior counsel with a silk gown of superior quality.
Taking silk is more than a change in title or attire. It signifies the attainment of senior status within the legal profession and recognition of an advocate’s experience, professional standing and advocacy skills.
The expression also refers to the advocate’s admission to the Inner Bar.
The Inner Bar is the second bar table the area of the courtroom directly in front of the judge’s bench where advocates and court officials are situated during proceedings.
Traditionally, Senior Counsel are entitled to sit at the Inner Bar, while junior advocates sit at the Outer Bar.
In England and certain Commonwealth jurisdictions, the appointment of senior counsel has historically been formalized through Letters Patent, which serve as the legal instrument confirming the appointment.
The physical transformation associated with taking silk remains one of its most recognizable features. as the Senior Counsel adopts the traditional silk gown, distinguishing them from junior counsel who ordinarily wear gowns made from wool or other materials.

HISTORICAL ORIGINS OF TAKING SILK

The tradition dates back to the late 16th century, specifically to the appointment of Sir Francis Bacon in 1597. Historically, these advocates were retained to provide legal advice specifically to the Crown.
The requirement to wear silk was a mark of their proximity to the Sovereign and their elevated duty to the state.
In the centuries that followed, the role evolved from a political appointment to a merit-based honor.
While the silk was once a literal uniform for the King's legal advisors, it eventually became the standard ceremonial dress for all senior advocates in the UK and various Commonwealth jurisdictions.
The tradition was later adopted in a number of Commonwealth jurisdictions, including South Africa and Zambia, although the procedures and legal requirements for appointment differ.

Although the terminology and appointment procedures may differ between jurisdictions, taking silk generally represents the attainment of senior status and recognition of professional distinction at the Bar.
