A formal Letter of Demand is typically the first formal step to address a legal dispute. It gives the other party an opportunity to remedy the situation before legal proceedings are instituted.

If the dispute remains unresolved, the next step is typically to issue a court summons which sets out the claim and the legal basis thereof.

The party receiving a summons (Defendant), will then have the opportunity to defend the action should he wish to place his defence before Court for adjudication.
