Women on Farms Project A Brief History of WFP: Who are we? The Women on Farms Project (WFP) works with women in commercial agriculture, mainly in the Western Cape Province.

The project grew out of a 1992 Lawyers for Human Rights initiative aimed at meeting the specialised needs of women who live and work on farms (farmwomen). The overall mission of the organisation is to empower and strengthen the capacity of women who live and work on farms to claim their rights and fulfil their needs. WFP is seen as a key role player in the sector and demand for its services and participation both from its constituency, farmwomen, and other role players remains high. The 2005 NOVIB-commissioned external evaluation of WFP concluded that:

WFP is a well-known organisation with a strong reputation and is held in high regard by peer organisations in the NGO sector as well as other stakeholders. The organisation is a strongly responsive organisation – well in touch with its external context, making it easily accessible to its target group and to its partners.

The workers who grow your food cannot afford to eat it.

This year’s National Farm Worker Platform is underway in Cape Town. We will spend the next 3 days discussing the most pressing issues faced by farm workers in South Africa including unlivable wages, exposure to deadly pesticides, farm evictions and the rise of precarious working conditions.

Whilst the struggles faced by farm workers often seem insurmountable, we are reminded that systemic change is possible when we embrace resistance everywhere, all the time. Resistance in protesting, in growing our own food, in joining trade unions, and in organizing our communities is how we will reform the agricultural sector to one in which workers can live in dignity.

Empowering activists from across Africa to fight against the foreign chemicals that a poisoning their communities ☠️

Pesticides that are banned from use in the EU, but still produced in the EU and exported to African countries, are ruining the lives of workers and communities across our beautiful continent 🌍

Just because you can’t see the damage being done doesn’t mean our people are not suffering on a daily basis.

End the double standards.

If you, as an individual, feel called out and offended by GBV posts you’re part of the problem, even if you have never laid a hand on a woman, your attitude and approach is part of the problem.

Men who have a healthy relationship with their masculinity and their emotions; men who would never hurt another human being; men who can understand the role that harmful masculinities play in perpetuating cycles of crime and GBV do not get offended by GBV posts - they join the fight by taking a public and private stance against GBV.

Men aren’t inherently bad.
Masculinity isn’t inherently toxic.
But if you feel called out by a public movement against men who hurt women - you are part of the problem.

If you are part of the problem, or if you are a man that just wants to do better, you can check out organisations like Father A Nation or A Call to Men who help men to develop a healthy sense of masculinity.
