Could you prove you’ve registered your domestic worker for UIF if a labour inspector asked today?

If you’ve tried and got stuck, that’s not your fault. uFiling, the Department’s UIF website, can’t give a first-time employer a UIF number. It only works once you already have one.

At register.askmandla.com you give us your details and your worker’s. We fill in the official UI-8D and UI-19 forms, you sign, and we submit them to the Department. R450 once-off, per worker.

The moment we submit, you get a Certificate of Application by email. It shows the date your application went in. It isn’t the registration itself, so we keep following up with the Department until your UIF reference number comes through.

Once you’re registered, UIF is monthly: 2% of her wage, 1% from her and 1% from you. It’s due within 7 days after the month ends, for as long as she works 24 hours a month or more for you. Pay late and there’s a 10% penalty plus interest.

If you’d rather not track that every month, Mandla can run it. For R49 a month per worker, you send us one amount, and we pay her wages and her UIF and send her payslip.

Most people get their domestic worker’s leave completely wrong, and it costs them the day she leaves. Here’s the whole thing in twenty seconds.

Annual leave: about three days a year for every day a week she works. Five days a week, that’s fifteen.

Sick leave: over three years, the days she’d work in six weeks. For a full-timer, thirty.

Family responsibility: five days a year, if she works four or more days a week.

And when she leaves, any leave she hasn’t taken, you pay out. So it’s worth knowing the number now.

Save this so you have it.

News24’s headline: “Domestic worker earns in 2 years what a CEO makes in 1 day.” It’s clickbait, and it isn’t news: we know how big our income divide is. That’s structural inequality, and it deserves a proper conversation. But a CEO against a domestic worker is apples and bricks (the reasons are in the comments), and a headline like this doesn’t help an everyday employer pay a wage that matters. Talking about fair pay at home does. The Common Sense’s view, in “The Economics of Domestic Workers”, is that making a life as a domestic worker in South Africa is almost never sustainable. In the homes we pay, a five-day, live-out wage is typically R7,000 a month. That matters more to her than this headline.

Two takeaways: watch The Common Sense full video on YouTube and visit wages.askmandla.com for fair-wage guidance in your province. Is that fair? Tell me below.

A contract, UIF, COIDA, payslips, payday, leave: employing someone at home is a lot of tickboxes, often for just a day or two a week. We take the whole lot and run it every month in one WhatsApp chat, so your worker is paid on time with a real payslip, and you’re free to focus on the relationship.

UIF

03/10/2026

People make UIF registration way more scary and complex (and expensive 🫣) than what it is.

Yes the system is a little broken, but there are platforms like ours to help. UIF is relatively cheap, and pretty straightforward.

We make it super simple to get going if you need the help. But Mandla is also available on WhatsApp (for free) to provide any guidance you need on this topic.

The 13th cheque in 15 seconds. A month’s extra pay in December is kind, and plenty of good employers pay it, but the law doesn’t require it. Once it’s promised in the contract, it’s owed.

Business Day reports where minimum wage rules are most ignored: a report for the National Minimum Wage Commission found pay below the minimum is most common in rural districts, and the Commission’s own finding is that it is highest on farms and in private homes (domestic work). The minimum is R30.23 an hour, the same in a city, a rural town or on a farm. Food doesn’t count towards it; only money paid for her ordinary hours does. R33 an hour from March 2027 is a proposal from the Federation of Unions of South Africa (Fedusa), not a decision: the Minister of Employment and Labour sets the 2027 rate. Follow for the final rate.

‘Do I deduct tax from my domestic worker?’ Usually not. Income tax only starts above about R99,000 a year, roughly R8,250 a month, and a full-time domestic wage is well under it. So usually no PAYE. The catch is a part-timer who also works for other households, who can be taxed at a flat rate unless they declare you are their only employer. UIF is the separate one that does apply, from 24 hours a month. And no, you can’t claim the wage back from SARS, because a home isn’t a business.
