South Africa's visa system is undergoing a significant digital shift.

More than 203,000 applications have already been processed through the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), while over 5,700 fraudulent applications have been identified using machine learning, biometric verification, and automated risk analysis.

Speaking at the Xpatweb Global Mobility Conference, Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber explains why the ETA goes beyond simply digitising an existing visa process. This platform is being developed as the foundation for a broader digital immigration system, with visitor visa extensions already introduced and additional visa categories, including Study Visas, planned for expansion.

Could this signal a very different future for South Africa's visa system?

The Minister of Home Affairs has signed a waiver of the requirement for foreign nationals in South Africa to submit visa renewal applications at least 60 days before their current visa expires, a precondition that has been described as a significant practical stumbling block for visa applicants.

According to Jaco Brits (Head of Immigration), the Xpatweb Team has seen a significant influx of visa refusals where the 60-day requirement was the sole reason for the rejection. This created an additional backlog in Appeal applications, with hundreds of applicants and their families affected.

The latest development is particularly significant because the waiver will apply retrospectively, including to qualifying applications that are currently under Appeal. The Department indicated that the negative decision on affected Appeal applications will be overturned, allowing the underlying visa applications to be processed and issued accordingly.

Once the relevant Appeal applications have been overturned, the applications of affected accompanying family members can also be resolved.

South Africa’s Home Affairs reform is changing how citizens access Smart ID services, with the banking sector partnership rapidly expanding the number of locations available across the country.

Speaking at the Xpatweb Global Mobility Conference, Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber explains how technology helped take the partnership from a limited banking pilot to hundreds of participating branches while bringing services closer to communities that previously had to travel significant distances to reach a Home Affairs office.

South Africa’s Electronic Travel Authorisation is gaining momentum, paving the way for the future digital processing of all visa categories. Since its official launch in August 2026, the ETA has expanded from tourists from China, India, Mexico, and Indonesia to travellers from 53 countries.

The digital system allows eligible travellers to apply online from anywhere in the world, using biometric technology and machine learning to support faster processing while strengthening the integrity of South Africa’s immigration system.

But the ETA is not intended to remain limited to tourist and short-stay travel. The longer-term aim is for it to become the single-entry point and central platform for an end-to-end digital immigration system, eventually extending to categories including Study Visas, Spousal Visas and Work Visas.

Could this be the beginning of a fully digital immigration system for South Africa?
