A significant development in South Africa’s immigration landscape provides a much-needed relief to foreign nationals, employers and families affected by the 60-day visa submission requirement.

The Minister of Home Affairs has waived the requirement to submit visa renewal applications, as well as applications for changes to visa status or conditions at least 60 days before the expiry of an individual’s existing visa.

Importantly, the waiver also applies retrospectively to qualifying applications and pending appeals affected by the 60-day submission requirement, providing a pathway for these matters to be reconsidered.

While applications must still be submitted before the existing visa expires, this development removes a longstanding administrative obstacle and provides an opportunity to resolve outstanding matters.

Policy announcements are one part of immigration reform. Implementation determines their impact.

At the Xpatweb 6th Annual Global Mobility Conference, Minister of Home Affairs Dr. Leon Schreiber reinforced the Department’s focus on ex*****on, stating that “every day, of every week, of every month, we are working to implement, implement, and implement”.

That focus can be seen across initiatives including the Electronic Travel Authorisation, Home Affairs @ home and the expansion of the Trusted Employer Scheme.
