We were honoured to hear from Ms Sophie de Bruyn this morning. At its heart, Ms Sophie de Bruyn’s keynote address was a passing of the baton.

She reminded us that our responsibility was not merely to honour the women of 1956, but to become worthy custodians of the legacy they entrusted to us. Carrying their courage forward, protecting the gains they fought for, and continuing the work of building a more just and equal society.

A failed asylum application is not the end of a legal process. It is the beginning of another.

The law is clear: every person, regardless of status, is entitled to due process, access to courts and protection from refoulement. Yet in practice, failed asylum claims often leave applicants in legal limbo, with little understanding of their rights or remedies.

The panel will convene for a discussion to unpack this critical gap. We will examine the legal framework governing failed asylum applications, the role of the courts, the obligations of the State and the systemic failures that undermine the rule of law.

This conversation is not optional. It is necessary because when the law is not applied consistently, both the integrity of our asylum system and the dignity of the people within it are at risk.
