The landlord cannot unfairly withold your deposit.

According to the Rental Housing Act of South Africa:

1. Your deposit must be refunded within 7 days after vacating the premises (if there is no damages);

2. In the event of damages, the landlord must provide an invoice and refund the remainder of the balance within 14 days;

3. Landlord must provide a reason for withholding the deposit.
