- Many matriculants and other school-leavers end their school years without knowing what type of job to take up or what qualification to study for at which type of educational institution.

They also do not plan their further training or have sufficient fees to study. Many study any degree, just to have a qualification, because they never received career information or employment counselling.

When reality sets in, they feel very confused. Those with degrees might find they have chosen the wrong study field and cannot find work, because there is no demand for that qualification.

These workers may feel very unhappy in their work. Others will start a new study field; spending more money.

The Department has career counsellors at labour centres and can assist clients with free Carter services.

Proposed new National Minimum Wage (NMW) for domestic workers:

The NMW for domestic workers is currently R25.42 per hour. The Department of Employment and Labour’s NMW Commission is considering an above-inflation hike to the NMW in 2024 for domestic workers. The increase would come into effect in March 2024. The Commission announced in December 2023 that it was investigating three proposals for the NMW increase in 2024:

a. Most of the Commissioners recommended CPI plus 3%;
b. The Business Constituency recommended only CPI;
c. An independent expert recommended CPI plus 0.78%.

CPI plus 3% would see the NMW increasing to R27.71 per hour in 2024.
Only CPI would see the NMW increasing to R26.95 per hour in 2024.

While the increase to the NMW is great news for domestic workers, many South African households have suffered great financial pressure over the last few years due to high levels of inflation. This may result in the further loss of jobs for domestic workers.

Employers, please take note that, with effect from 1 March 2023, the minimum wage has been increased by an average of 9.6%. Therefore, the minimum wage has increased from R23.19 per hour to R25.42 per hour for all employees, including farm workers and domestic workers.

Also, the new annual earnings threshold has been increased and is now R241 110.59; and the new monthly earnings threshold is now R20 092.55, before deductions; income tax; pension; medical aid; and similar payments.

However, the above excludes payments/contributions made by the employer, such as subsistence allowances; transport allowances; achievement awards; and overtime payments.

Please feel free to contact us should you wish to know more pertaining to the above.

For instance, did you know that you now get "Parental Leave" and not just maternity or paternity leave?

Hope to hear from you soon.
