A Brits magistrate allegedly attended a "wellness seminar" instead of starting the trial of a Hartbeespoort couple accused of sexually abusing the woman's five-year-old daughter in 2018.

The mother and stepfather face charges of r**e and sexual assault. The case has dragged on for eight years, and the trial was finally set to begin on Thursday. The girl is now 14 years old.

"The magistrate failed to appear at the Brits Magistrates' Court on Thursday, 23 July, due to the 'unforeseen circumstances', as described by the prosecutor, of having to attend a wellness seminar event in Rustenburg. Meanwhile, the young girl and all the witnesses were present for the start of the trial that was set down for two days," said Barry Bateman, spokesperson for AfriForum's Private Prosecution Unit.

In January 2017, Alexander Delgado, an inmate at Peru’s high-security Ancón I prison, also known as Piedras Gordas, carried out an extraordinary prison escape.

During a scheduled visit, his identical twin brother, Giancarlo, came to see him and brought food and letters from family. Giancarlo claimed that Alexander secretly slipped a sedative into his drink, although a reported toxicology test found no drugs or alcohol in his system. After Giancarlo reportedly lost consciousness, Alexander swapped clothes and identification with him, left his brother inside the prison cell, and walked out disguised as a visitor. He passed through six security checkpoints without being stopped.

Hours later, guards discovered Giancarlo lying unconscious in the cell. When he woke up, he insisted that he was not the prisoner and claimed that his brother had drugged him and exchanged places with him. Authorities initially suspected that Giancarlo had helped his brother escape and detained him. Fingerprint checks proved that he was Giancarlo rather than the escaped prisoner, and prosecutors later dropped the charges against him.

Alexander remained on the run for more than a year before police recaptured him.
