POPIA. PAIA. Two acronyms that many business owners hear regularly, but few fully understand.

While these Acts are closely linked, they serve very different purposes:
🔒 POPIA protects personal information and regulates how organisations collect, process, store, and destroy personal data.
📄 PAIA gives individuals the right to access information held by public and private bodies when required to exercise or protect their rights.

Some businesses may have specific obligations under both Acts. The most common examples of obligations many businesses have to comply with include:
• Maintaining the required PAIA documentation
• Appointing and registering an Information Officer
• Implementing compliant POPIA policies and procedures
• Managing requests for access to information correctly
• Protecting personal information throughout its lifecycle

Labour Quest assists businesses with POPIA and PAIA compliance. Don't wait until a complaint, information request or regulatory investigation exposes gaps in your compliance.

⚠️ R5-billion set aside for recruitment of new labour inspectors⚠️

🚨 Last year the department announced the recruitment of 20 000 interns over a 2 year period. We saw recently that approx. 10 000 interns have been recruited.

Earlier in the week the Employment and Labour Minister, Nomakhosazana M**h, whilst delivering the Department of Employment and Labour’s Budget Vote in Parliament on Tuesday, 19 May 2026, said that “following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement during the 2026 State of the Nation Address that 10 000 permanent labour inspectors will be appointed.”

Minister M**h went on to say that: “The Department will start with the recruitment of these permanent inspectors, instead of recruiting the remaining 10 000 interns. We have set aside R5 billion for the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) period…” 💸🚓

Employers should act promptly to avoid stringent penalties. The department of Employment and Labour’s Inspectorate will thus be in a stronger position to intensify labour law enforcement, including:
✅ conducting more labour inspections.
✅ faster follow-ups when dealing with cases of non-compliance.
✅ increased rates of prosecution of employers who fail to comply.

➡️ Government is on a warpath to clamp down on non-compliance with all labour legislation.

📩 Contact Labour Quest today to help your business become fully compliant with labour legislation and prepared for inspections. We help employers understand risks, update workplace practices and documentation, and avoid costly penalties.

👉 💼 As an employer, now is the time to act, before inspectors arrive at your door.

⚠️ These young recruits are the new boots on the ground in the fight against labour exploitation, non-compliance and workplace injustice… Is Your Business Ready? ⚠️

🚨 Employment and Labour Minister, Nomakhosazana M**h, whilst delivering the Department of Employment and Labour’s Budget Vote in Parliament on Tuesday, 19 May 2026, said government is intensifying workplace inspections and labour law reforms to improve compliance and worker protection.

The Minister said that: “The first phase of 10 000 inspector interns commenced during the 2025/26 financial year, and by the end of April 2026, approximately 3 800 young interns had already entered training and deployment processes”

She said a further 3 500 interns will begin at the end of May, while another 2 700 will start by the end of June 2026.

“These young recruits are the new boots on the ground in the fight against labour exploitation, non-compliance and workplace injustice,” she said.

Their message is clear:
➡️ Non-compliance will not be tolerated.
➡️ Employers’ have to comply with all labour legislation.
💼 As an employer, now is the time to take action, before the Department’s Insepction and Enforcement services arrive at your door.

📩 Contact Labour Quest today to help your business become fully compliant with labour legislation and prepared for inspections. We help employers correct risks, update workplace documentation, and avoid costly penalties.

👉 Don’t wait. Compliance isn’t optional, it’s urgent!
