CUSTOMARY MARRIAGES: HAVE YOU REGISTERED YOUR MARRIAGE?

Did you miss the 31 August 2026 deadline to register your customary marriage? Don't panic, but don't delay.

The Department of Home Affairs has encouraged couples to register their customary marriages. The good news is that, according to its recent communication, couples can still enquire about registering after the deadline.

THIS IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE :

If your spouse passes away, proving that your customary marriage existed may become difficult and could lead to disputes over inheritance and property. Proper documentation can help protect your rights and prevent unnecessary legal complications.

If your customary marriage is not yet registered, contact Home Affairs to establish what documents and evidence you need. These may include proof of lobola negotiations and witnesses who can confirm the marriage.

Every July, South Africans come together to give 67 minutes of community service for Mandela Month,one minute for every year Nelson Mandela spent fighting for human rights and justice.

When Madiba walked out of prison, he didn't just win a personal victory; he used his legal knowledge and leadership to give South Africa a brand new Constitution. That meant rights for everyone, no matter where they come from or how much money they have.

Giving 67 minutes isn't just about painting a wall or donating food (though that’s amazing!). It’s a warm reminder that everyone has something to offer to help someone else.

We believe Madiba’s legacy lives on every time we treat people with dignity, stand up for the little guy, and make sure the law works for our community, not against it.

A simple act of kindness takes just over an hour, but its impact can last a lifetime.
