WOMEN’S MONTH | KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

As we commemorate Women’s Month under the national theme "Empowered Women Empower the Nation", we pay tribute to the courageous women who marched in 1956, as well as every woman building a future in South Africa today.

This Women’s Month, we celebrate the strength, resilience and achievements of women while recognising the importance of knowing and understanding your rights.

Every woman has the right to dignity, equality, safety and to be treated fairly, in the workplace, in relationships, in business and within society.

We believe that knowledge of the law is a powerful tool for empowerment, Know your rights. Know your worth. Know when to seek legal advice.

This Women’s Month, let us celebrate the women who continue to break barriers, lead with courage and create a better future for generations to come.

Every July, South Africans come together to give 67 minutes of community service for Mandela Month, one minute for every year Nelson Mandela spent fighting for human rights and justice.

When Madiba walked out of prison, he didn't just win a personal victory; he used his legal knowledge and leadership to give South Africa a brand new Constitution. That meant rights for everyone, no matter where they come from or how much money they have.

Giving 67 minutes isn't just about painting a wall or donating food (though that’s amazing!). It’s a warm reminder that everyone has something to offer to help someone else.

We believe Madiba’s legacy lives on every time we treat people with dignity, stand up for the little guy, and make sure the law works for our community, not against it.

A simple act of kindness takes just over an hour, but its impact can last a lifetime.

If you or your kids are busy putting together applications for a new job, a school place, or a government grant this month, we are wishing you the absolute best of luck! But before you head out to get your papers sorted, here is a quick, warm reminder to protect your hard earned money: certifying copies of your ID, birth certificates, or qualifications at any police station, court, or post office is always 100% free.

Never let anyone convince you to pay a "small fee" or a bribe just to get a official stamp on your documents. That stamp is a public service meant to help you move forward in life, not take money out of your pocket when things are already tight.

We love seeing our community hustle, grow, and build a better future. Good luck to everyone handing in their applications this week, Month or year.

The nationwide marches were out in full force yestarday. While the streets are back to normal today, it’s a good reminder of how South Africa balances the right to speak up with the everyday flow of the city.

The law actually protects your right to gather and march, but it isn't a free-for-all. To keep the peace, organizers have to give the local municipality a 7-day notice before taking to the streets. It’s not about asking for permission; it’s about giving the city time to re-route traffic and deploy authorities so everyone, both the marchers and the motorists trying to get to work, stays safe.

There are also two strict rules everyone has to follow: the crowd must be completely unarmed, and the gathering must stay peaceful. This is crucial because if a march crosses the line and property gets damaged, the organizers can be held personally liable for the costs. Trashing a storefront or breaking infrastructure comes with a massive bill that goes straight to the people who planned the event.

The Bottom Line: The law completely backs your right to voice your opinion, but it expects respect for the community sharing the space.

Road Accident Claims and the "Hit and Run"

"I was in an accident with an unidentified vehicle, can I still claim?" 🚗💥

Car accidents are incredibly stressful, and it’s even worse when the driver responsible speeds off without leaving their details.
Many people assume that if you don't know who hit you, you can't claim. However, the Road Accident Fund Act (RAF Act) exists to provide a safety net for victims of road accidents in South Africa, even in "hit and run" scenarios. The catch? The time limits are much stricter. While a normal RAF claim gives you three years to lodge, an unidentified vehicle claim must be submitted within two years of the accident, or you lose your right to claim entirely.

⚖️ If you've been injured on the road, don't miss the deadline.

🚨 IMPORTANT RAF UPDATE 🚨

The Supreme Court of Appeal has ruled against the RAF’s stricter claim submission rules that caused thousands of claims to be rejected since 2022.

This means that people whose RAF claims were previously rejected because of “missing documents” or the new RAF1 form requirements may now get another opportunity to re-submit their claims before the end of September.

The RAF has confirmed that it will soon begin a communication campaign explaining how affected claimants can re-submit their claims.

If your claim was rejected or you are unsure about the status of your RAF matter, do not panic, our offices are closely following these developments and remain committed to assisting our clients every step of the way.
