Meet Louise Swart, Senior Associate in our Tax Law and Tax Litigation practice.

Louise holds an LLB and an LLM in Insolvency Law from the University of Pretoria, along with an MBA specialising in financial management for business rescues. Before joining VZLR, she spent years as a Specialist in Tax Court Litigation at SARS, later leading the legal team for SARS's Illicit Economy Unit — running forensic investigations and appearing in Tax Courts and the Full Bench of the High Court across the country.

That background means Louise brings something rare to a tax dispute: the perspective of having sat on both sides of the table. Clients get technical tax advisory support paired with genuine High Court litigation experience — a combination that matters when a dispute with SARS moves beyond correspondence and into court.

Banking & Financial Law, explained.

Our Banking & Financial Law department acts on behalf of several banks, financial institutions and co-operatives, with litigation as the core focus. The work spans business and personal banking disputes, debt recovery on behalf of credit providers, foreclosures, fraud investigations, sequestrations and liquidations.

It's a department built around a straightforward mandate: protect our clients' financial interests, move matters through the courts efficiently, and get results. Over the years, that focus has been recognised with several industry accolades.

Swipe through for a breakdown of what the department covers.

"Have courage and be kind." — Daniela, Conveyancing

A property transfer is rarely just a property transfer. It's a first home, a downsizing after a loss, a sale forced by circumstances nobody planned for. The deeds and the deadlines are the visible part of the job. What's driving them usually isn't.

Courage, in this context, isn't about taking on the hard cases. It's about staying honest with a client when the news isn't what they hoped for, and doing it in a way that still leaves them feeling supported.

Kindness isn't the opposite of professionalism — it's what makes the professionalism land. A client who trusts the person handling their file communicates more openly, asks the questions that matter, and gets a better outcome for it. This month, we're looking at what happens when legal expertise and human understanding work together, not apart.

A verbal agreement can be just as binding as a written one — South African law recognises both.

The difference is what happens when something goes wrong. When the terms were never written down, disputes quickly become one person's word against another's. A well-drafted contract removes that uncertainty before it becomes a problem.

Our Corporate & Commercial Law team helps businesses put the right documentation in place from the outset: shareholders' agreements, supply and service agreements, governance frameworks, and more. Not because a handshake deal is worthless but because clarity upfront is worth more than a dispute later.

This Women's Month, we are recognising the women across VZLR who show up for clients with rigour and resolve.

The women who lead our litigation matters in the High Court. Who structure commercial deals. Who sit across the table from clients on some of the hardest days of their lives and help them find a way through.

Representation in law isn't a talking point for us, it's who's doing the work. To every woman at VZLR, and to the women we are privileged to represent: thank you.

The Offer to Purchase is just the beginning. Between signing that document and receiving your keys, there’s a process involving banks, municipalities, the Deeds Office, and your conveyancing attorney. It can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to.

Swipe to see VZLR’s step-by-step breakdown of the home transfer process. Clear, simple, no jargon.

When you’re ready to buy or sell, our Conveyancing team is here to guide every step.

In litigation, the strongest case is often the best-documented one.
Every signed agreement, confirmation email, and written instruction is a record and in a dispute, those records can be the difference between a claim that succeeds and one that doesn’t.

It’s a principle our litigation team lives by: document everything. Verbal assurances are forgotten. Paper trails hold up in court.

Your employment contract is one of the most important documents you will ever sign — and most people only read it properly once something has already gone wrong.

The Basic Conditions of Employment Act requires your employer to give you written particulars covering things like your job description, working hours, pay, leave and notice period. These aren’t optional extras — they are your legal minimum.

Before you sign anything (or if you are not sure what is actually in your current contract), it is worth checking against what the law requires.

On 18 July, the world marks Nelson Mandela International Day — a day that asks each of us to take action, not just reflect.

Mandela dedicated 67 years of his life to service. The campaign that bears his name asks just 67 minutes of ours: volunteer, donate, or simply do something for someone else today.

At VZLR, we’re proud to honour his legacy of justice, equality and access to the law for all.
