Happy Youth Day!

On 16 June 1976, thousands of young South Africans took to the streets in Soweto to protest the imposition of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in black schools. They demanded the right to learn — in a language they understood, in a system that recognised their dignity.

Fifty years later, we honour their courage with a different kind of literacy: legal literacy.
South Africa's Constitution is one of the most progressive in the world. But a right that isn't understood is a right that can't be exercised.

A few rights every young South African should know:
Section 9 — The right to equality and freedom from discrimination
Section 14 — The right to privacy
Section 26 — The right of access to adequate housing
Section 35 — Rights of arrested, detained and accused persons
To the youth of South Africa: your voice matters. Your rights matter. Know them. Use them.

Ever come across a legal term and thought... what does that actually mean?
We’re breaking down legal language one word at a time.

CODICIL [koh-di-sil]
A codicil is a legal document that amends, supplements, or partially revokes the provisions of an existing Will, without the need to rewrite the entire Will.

When would you use one? A few examples:
- A new beneficiary is added (e.g. a grandchild is born)
- An executor needs to be changed
- A specific bequest (asset) is added or removed

Important: A codicil must be signed and witnessed in the same manner as a valid Will under the Wills Act 7 of 1953.

Think of it as a legal “edit” to the most important document you’ll ever write.

A cold May morning. Five leading banks. One outstanding day of padel.
On Friday, 8 May, we hosted the inaugural Interbank Padel Challenge at PadelTop West in Monument Park, 38 guests from across South Africa's banking sector, all showing up for it. The day kicked off with hot cappuccinos and breakfast before 20 players took to the courts in a competitive Americano team-format tournament, each team battling through 9 games.

After a tightly fought contest, Team Standard Bank claimed victory by a single point ahead of Team Investec, with Team RMB2 completing the podium in third. While not every team dominated on the scoreboard, Team Absa Trust made sure their presence was felt, taking home the award for Best Dressed and unquestionably bringing the most drip to the day.

Competition. Camaraderie. Cold fronts. Great coffee.
This is the beginning of what will become an annual tradition. Thank you to everyone who joined us, this one will be hard to beat.

Locus Standi

Pronounced: loh-kus STAN-dee

Latin for 'place of standing' but in plain language, it means: Do you have the right to bring this case to court?
Before a court decides whether you win or lose, it first has to decide whether you have the right to be heard at all. That's locus standi.
If you don't have locus standi, your case can be dismissed, not on its merits, but simply because the court finds you aren't the right person to bring it.
In South Africa, our Constitution (section 38) takes a broad approach: a person acting in the public interest, or on behalf of a group, may also have locus standi, even if they are not the one directly harmed.

Understanding this concept is the first step to understanding your access to justice.

You are never too young to have a will.

If you have people who depend on you, children, a partner, ageing parents, you already have a reason to have a will.

In South Africa, anyone 16 years or older can make a valid will. Yet the majority of South Africans die intestate (without one), leaving their families to navigate an often lengthy and stressful estate administration process. Without a will, your estate is distributed according to the Intestate Succession Act, which may not reflect your wishes. Your assets could go to people you wouldn't have chosen, or exclude people you would have.

A will gives you the power to decide:
- Who inherits your assets
- Who looks after your minor children
- How and when your estate is distributed

It takes less time than you think. Let's make it happen.
