Christa Pike USA: Latest update — 8 October 2026:

Condition: Very encouraging. Pike is now up and walking for the first time since the failed ex*****on. She remains in hospital, however, and still has significant medical problems, including pneumonia, a blood clot and serious swelling/injury to both arms. Her doctors still don't know how much arm function she will ultimately recover.
She is speaking and remembers aspects of what happened, although she remains cognitively confused. Her first reported words were: “Where am I?” and “Who are you?”
Legal position: A judge has ordered Tennessee to preserve all evidence from the failed ex*****on, including drugs, needles, records and recordings. The judge also ruled that Pike must have proper access to her lawyers while in hospital.
Death sentence: It still stands, but Governor Bill Lee has paused Tennessee ex*****ons and ordered an independent investigation. Pike's lawyers have renewed their request for clemency/life imprisonment.
Could they execute her again? This is now a major unresolved constitutional question. Legal experts say a second attempt after she actually survived two lethal doses would be legally unprecedented and potentially subject to serious Eighth Amendment challenges.

In short: medically, she has improved dramatically; legally, she remains on death row, but another ex*****on attempt would face extraordinary legal obstacles.

The Pretoria High Court set aside the race-based B-BBEE sectoral codes for the legal profession after ruling that the Minister's decision to issue them was irrational and failed to comply with statutory and constitutional requirements.

Key Details of the Ruling

* The Case: Brought by the trade union Solidarity against the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, and the Legal Practice Council.
* The Codes: The challenged Legal Sector Code—signed in September 2024—enforced rigid targets such as 50% black ownership (with 25% black female ownership) and 50% black representation in law firm management.
* Court Findings:
• The Pretoria High Court declared the racial codes unlawful, irrational, and unconstitutional.
• The court noted that the public consultation process was deeply flawed, as roughly 76% of public comments opposed the codes and were ignored by authorities.
The codes were officially set aside with a cost order awarded in Solidarity's favour.

During the high-stakes proceedings, state respondents alleged that Judge Janse van Nieuwenhuizen demonstrated bias via her line of questioning and interjections.
