During and after the completion of their law studies, students are often faced with the difficult decision regarding the career to pursue in line with their qualification. It is with this in mind that we bring together legal professionals from different sectors of practice to provide practical guidance and information to students and graduates about the respective careers.

The primary objectives of the workshop are:
• To provide a platform for engagement and discussions between law students and professionals in the field of law.
• Facilitate networking and knowledge exchange among attendees.
• Ensure that the students have a broader understanding of the various career opportunities available to them.

This workshop has proven to be a significant platform for students who would like to broaden their knowledge on the career paths available to law graduates as they get to engage directly with professionals in the field. Law students and graduates from Unisa are therefore invited to attend this event and get first-hand practical information about being in the legal profession. Attendees also get the opportunity to canvass challenges they are facing in deciding which direction to take in their careers.

⚖️ LAW CAREER GUIDANCE WORKSHOP | KEYNOTE ANNOUNCEMENT

The Unisa Law Clinic is honoured to announce Judge Daniel Thulare as the keynote speaker for the 3rd Annual Law Career Guidance Workshop, taking place on 8 September 2026.

A proud Unisa graduate, Judge Thulare brings extensive judicial and professional experience to this important platform. His distinguished legal career commenced in 1999, when he was appointed as a magistrate. Prior to his appointment to the Western Cape Division of the High Court, he served in an acting capacity in both the Gauteng Division of the High Court and the Western Cape Division of the High Court.

Beyond the Bench, Judge Thulare is an accomplished author and respected public speaker, with a wealth of experience and insight into the South African legal profession. The workshop will provide an opportunity for law students and graduates to gain a deeper understanding of his professional journey, his contribution to the development of South African jurisprudence, and selected judgments associated with his judicial career.

His keynote address promises to be an enriching and inspiring engagement, offering practical guidance and valuable perspective to aspiring legal practitioners as they navigate their own pathways into the legal profession.

This honour is a powerful acknowledgment not only of Adv. Morota’s leadership, but of a sustained commitment to access to justice, human dignity, equality, legal empowerment and transformative community service.

Since assuming office as Head of the Unisa Law Clinic in 2020, Adv. Morota embraced a bold vision of taking access to justice beyond geographical boundaries. Under his leadership, the Clinic expanded from a single branch at Unisa’s Pretoria Main Campus to additional branches in Polokwane, Middelburg and Parow, enabling thousands of indigent people to access quality legal services with dignity and hope.

It is therefore fitting that this recognition comes alongside his impactful keynote address at the Clevenard Open Project 2026, where he addressed:

“Access to Justice, Ethical Leadership, and Inclusive Development in a Changing World.”

His address offered a compelling reminder that the law must be more than an instrument for dispute resolution. It must serve as a foundation for protecting rights, advancing equality, strengthening institutions and enabling inclusive development.

As part of the Clevenard Open Project 2026, Adv. Kgagudi Morota, Head of the Unisa Law Clinic, delivered an impactful keynote address on:

Grounded in the principles of constitutionalism, ethical governance, human rights and inclusive development, the address challenged us to reflect on the role of law and leadership in shaping a more just and equitable future for Africa.

As part of the Clevenard Open Project 2026, Adv Kgagudi Morota, Head of the Unisa Law Clinic, has already had the privilege of engaging with a Mayor of Eswatini and the Municipal Council of Manzini.

These engagements provide an important platform for meaningful dialogue and knowledge exchange on matters relating to access to justice, education, governance and socio-economic development.

Adv. Morota’s participation on this international platform reflects the values championed by Unisa - The University of South Africa and the Unisa Law Clinic, including access to justice, legal empowerment, academic excellence and transformative community engagement.

His selection as a recipient of the Clevenard Global Honorary Award further recognises his contribution to legal education, access to justice and social transformation.
